Yeah, I was pretty happy about that too. Hopefully it will lead to a continuation of the series like they are talking about. It will be a hard movie to make; there a lot of cast members to deal with and they will have to pander down to people who have never seen the series so they will have to re-introduce them (or rather, re-re-introduce them.)

Oh, very, very, very, very effin' cool. I knew they were planning it, I'm thrilled as a monkey in a sock to hear it's a green light.

Me.

I agree. w00t, indeed.

First time I've seen the term "oater" used outside of a crossword puzzle.

Nathan Fillion to return as Capt. Malcolm Reynolds. Other original cast members Gina Torres, Morena Baccarin, Jewel Staite, Adam Baldwin, Sean Maher and Summer Glau

Hmmm... that leaves out Wash (the pilot) and Brooke (the Shepherd). Not likely they'll do the movie without those characters, so replacement actors, probably.

They didn't say that those other cast members had signed on. They were just listing some of them. I don't know why they got through six and left out the other two. Maybe some Variety writing style.

And his name is Book.

YES!!!!!!!!!!

I've given three different people a Firefly DVD box set as gifts and everyone of them has loved the show. But they also hate any spoilers so I can't share this with them.

Umm, there's no Book in the entire trailer. He's listed on IMDB, but I hope his part isn't as small as it is in the trailer; he's my favorite character.

Oh, wait. There he is, way in the background, at 1:56.

I'd say the trailer is relatively spoiler free. What, we get to see the psycho girl kick some serious ass, and we know the plot is all about the Alliance wanting to get her back, which is really not all that different from anything on the TV show. We also know that the SFX budget is an awful lot bigger than it was in the show. Lots of space battle pr0n...

Penny Arcade's take on the advance Serenity screenings next week.

Maybe NSFW, it is Penny Arcade after all, they loves them their naughty words.

Encoded, it would seem, by some super-duper codec available only on Mac for time being (or so QuickTime says)... There is also a 1080p version, equaly un-viewable.

Re: "Serenity" greenlit!!!! - 01/05/2005 16:32

Correct. Quicktime 7 is not available for the PC yet.

Re: "Serenity" greenlit!!!! - 01/05/2005 17:14

They are standard H.264 (a variant of MPEG4) files. If you have an H.264 codec and a player that understands Quicktime headers, they should play fine on any machine. Well, one with enough power anyhow. My Powerbook 1.25 struggles to maintain a perfect playback rate on the 720p ones. The 1080p ones choke it badly.

Although I have to admit, I can't quickly find a H.264 codec for Windows. I'm sure one exists, just can't find one that works to play these files in Media Player Classic.

Well, the procedure described here is less than practical...

BTW, is this the standard being used for videoconferencing? Or was that H.something_else ?

Re: "Serenity" greenlit!!!! - 01/05/2005 22:11

H.263 was probably what you are thinking about for videoconferencing. Wikipedia also has a good H.264 entry.

Re: "Serenity" greenlit!!!! - 02/05/2005 01:46

My home machine, a once wonderful dual-1.0 GHz G4 box, proved not entirely up to the task of watching the HD Serenity trailer. I downloaded everything, rebooted as apparently required, and started it up.

The 1080p trailer wasn't really 1080 scan lines tall. It was the full width of my display (1900x1200) but maybe 700 pixels tall. It rendered at maybe 5Hz, slamming both CPUs. The lower-resolution HD trailer got maybe 10-15Hz -- enough to get lip sync, but not enough to be smooth.

So... unless you've got one of the latest, greatest G5 machines, you're not going to get all the HD goodness that's potentially available. Still, the still-image resolusion is absolutely photographic quality. Stunning stuff.

Yeah, the trailers crop out black bars that would exist if they did a 16:9 video of a 2.35:1 trailer. I much prefer that then what some videos do online where they include the black bars to try and size it 4:3 or something.
