Win2k startup hell

Win2k startup hell - 29/06/2004 03:06

Ever since I recently upgraded the Radeon drivers on my Win2k box it insists on opening an explorer window at startup, opened to C:\Program Files\ATI\

Anyone know what could be causing this? It's not in any profiles Start menu. I'm guessing that something in the registry could be causing it, but I wouldn't know where to look.

Help!

You might want to check out the "Run" and "Run Once" version of: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion

Hell? Purgatory perhaps...

I was expecting BSOD stories and random lockups. One measly explorer window. Sheesh!

No, not there. I checked the corresponding paths under the other roots too.

Done the anti-virus and adaware/spybot thing yet?

Not yet. This box lives behind a firewall, doesn't do email and only uses mozilla occasionally for obtaining software upgrades. No p2p either.

I suppose it's possible, and I will go and do that now.

Doh. Sorry. Didn't notice that!

The next option is to systematically take out ATI entries in the run/runonce section of the registry. It's happened before to me but with a different driver and it turned out one of the helper apps was broken and kept bringing up the windows dir.

Maybe Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel add-on applet can help you track it down.....Randy

AVG negative, adaware caught a couple of data mines and a handful of tracking cookies. Registry Mechanic (the free version) found a handful of unrelated errors. It indicated a handful of other errors that only the $30 version would fix...not ready to had over my CC just yet.

The problem is still there. I'll check that new link next.

i love this program
it will ask if you want to allow any addition to the registry of the 'run at startup' type

Naughty naughty ATI app. Even after disabling it on the taskbar it was still loading something completely silently. And opening a windows explorer window too. Bad boy.

I like that Startup Control Panel. Small, clean, useful and efficient.

Thanks everyone!
