Password Protection for Pocket PC

Password Protection for Pocket PC - 28/07/2004 12:31

I am looking for something that would password protect my e-mail "Inbox" on my Pocket PC. Since it downloads copies of all my e-mail and puts it on the pocket pc, I need something to password protect the "Inbox" program (or one that would password protect any program on the pocket pc.). There is a password to get onto the pocket pc itself, but i work for a electronics retailer that sells them and I sometimes borrow it to co-workers to demo it or look at it and I don't want them reading my e-mail. . Any ideas?

There are various tools which will do everything from biometric protection on boot up with encrypted drive (require signature to boot) to folder encryption to mail encryption.

What type of thing were you looking for?

Don't palmtop computers all have global password protection built-in? In other words, it can be set up so that you can't boot it or wake it up from standby without entering a password? That's something the Palm devices had from day one, I thought all pocket PCs would have that, too.

He wants his cow-orkers to be able to use it to demo with...he just wants a password protected inbox to keep his email private if they are using it.

Ah, gotcha. Hadn't caught that. I thought the whole point of a handheld PC was that it's supposed to be like your own little personal notepad and address book. The idea of having one that's shared among multiple people is just weird to me.

If I were sharing a PC with someone else, I'd just make sure that all of my personal stuff was deleted off of it, or never stored on it in the first place.

TBH, I'm slightly perplexed that he works for an electronics retailer and yet has to loan out his own unit for demos. Surely it's the store's responsibility to provide the demo units?

I think you need to visit more crappy US electronics retailers. They consist of the gigantic chains that carry everything, but whose employees probably don't know what a PDA is, or mom-and-pop stores that carry about 0.1% of the available products, in which case, actually having one on hand is probably quite the coup.

Or, they're possibly demonstrating what it COULD do with some decent software instead of the crap that comes installed from the factory.
