Looking for Wallace and Gromit DVD - 27/11/2004 21:57

I'm desperately seeking a Wallace and Gromit DVD - its called Cracking Contraptions. Unluckily for me its no longer produced and not many were made. Does anyone happen to have a copy they'd sell me or know where I could get it? eBay revealed none

Thanks
Phil

Nothing on ebay at the moment but if you look at completed auctions they do come up fairly regularly, but ending at quite a bit more than they probably sold for. I reckon you will see one listed in the next few weeks, certainly in time for Christmas if that is your aim!

Sounds very interesting. What's on that DVD?

I'm desperate to see more Aardman stuff.

The outfit formerly known as BlackStar has an Aardman compilation and several Wallace & Gromit titles, but not the one Philip is looking for, regrettably. They are really classics (my favourite is 'Creature Comforts').

The DVD was (to my knowledge) never sold in the US. I suspect that they will be put into a new DVD release "real soon now". For a while, they were distributed elsewhere by Atom Films with DRM, but I do not even see that link anymore, nor are they available direct from Aardman.

Its short Wallace and Gromit films - about 10 I think. They were shown on the BBC in 2002 and then sold on DVD but only a few were made and sold solely on the Aardman website. If you Google for it theres a website that you can watch them on.

I "bought" those 10 shorts from Atom Films last year. I put bought in quotes b/c of the nasty DRM licensing that's in them. I wish I could help you out!

This is the site:

http://www.wallaceandgromit.com/filmsCC.asp

You can even download the segments in moderate res.

edit: My mistake, you can only download one segment, they just offer the same segment 10 times.

I hope you are spice.weasel. I wonder why was the guy selling such a collector's item so cheaply?

There's another copy up, I've just placed a bid (not bidding against any of you lot am I?)

Am I bidding against anyone here? I'll pull out if I am because the price is going through the roof

Err, yes, I am bazoo618. eBay finally stopped complaining about a customer from a strange, distant country . I don't intend to go over my current bid, but there's another bidder.

Edit: Ummm, I just realized you are 'the other bidder'. I should have checked your name Sorry, these are just fumblings of an eBay rookie

Heh, yes. I saw Tahir's (epwc) post here, but forgot the name (and handles are different, anyway). Then I saw Genixia's rather low bid, thought it was Tahir, saw another, higher bidder (real Tahir, actually), and went bidding against him merrily This will teach me not to rush. But I still think the price is fair for such a rarity.

Is mr_phaser on the board? Is anyone planning on sniping it? If not, I might...

I have often pondered on the legality of pirating copies of such out of print titles.......

It kind of goes like this......Buying a used on ebay gives nothing to the author or studio and as it is out of print there will never be any new ones to make money on etc.

Re: Looking for Wallace and Gromit DVD - 10/12/2004 06:34

It's still illegal, until the term of copyright expires, even if the original artist will never be able to make another penny from sales. Should it be? That's a whole 'nuther question. Morally wrong? Depends on your morals, I guess.

I guess the "should it be" was my real question.

I expect that if copyright were unenforceable on items that are "out of print", then a lot of things would stay technically in print but priced at £1,000,000 so that nobody would be any better off.

Re: Looking for Wallace and Gromit DVD - 10/12/2004 16:57

For me, if it the case of the nearly unobtainable stuff, I would grab a copy, especially when it is part of a collection. Then if the real thing comes around then I get the real thing, it is a collection after all!
A good case in point, I had a copied version of Dan Reed Network 'Slam' for years before finding a copy on ebay. It let me listen to a great album until I completed the set but nobody other than the previous owner made any money on it.

If you believe the RIAA, then we should not even be allowed to sell second hand DVDs or CDs now.

Remember years ago when Garth Brooks (IIRC) said he wouldn't allow his album to be sold at stores that also sold used CDs?
