Reprogramme remote control?

I bought my dad a freeview box for him to get all the free terrestrial digital channels and theres buttons on the remote to control a JVC television. Is there a way to allow the remote to control a Philips television? I remember a couple of years back I had a panasonic video recorder that allowed me to control any tv by inputing a code.
