Thanks to a good friend, I just got tickets to the one on the 26th in Roseville. I'm a happy boy.

I love Firefly, by the way.

The closest one to me is 3.5 hours away. I don't think I can justify taking an entire day off of work just to see a movie.

Re: Serenity Sneak Preview Showings - 10/05/2005 13:18

Bitt, thanks for motivating me to watch the show. I probably would have gotten around to it (I love Buffy and Angel), but you gave it a push. I still haven't bought it, but I plan to. I'm almost all the way through the series in the DVD order (not the crazy broadcast order), and your summary of the show in the initial thread about it is completely accurate. It has all the best character related elements from Joss's other shows, and it's the only "Sci-Fi" show I've ever enjoyed watching.

I think the show is perfect, although I've disliked the writing in one episode I've seen so far. I think a couple of the writers really got a kick out of the whold Chinese swearing thing and used it more often than seemed natural, but it's still funny

Frankly, I'll be really interested in how Joss makes this into a movie, given the nature of the series. I can't wait.

ps-oh, and Nathan Fillion is fantastic. It's very weird having seen this after watching season 7 twice and being very familiar with Caleb. He is wonderfull in both parts.

It doesn't matter anyway, they're all sold out.

Re: Serenity Sneak Preview Showings - 10/05/2005 14:02

Which episode did you not like? My least favorite is the whorehouse episode. It feels too much like a bad episode of The A-Team, sans cabbage guns.

Re: Serenity Sneak Preview Showings - 10/05/2005 14:53

It was War Stories. I really liked the premise and most of the episode, but there was something about it, plus the aforementioned over-use of the Chinese swearing "gag." But like I said, I didn't dislike the episode, there was just something about the writing which, at the time, struck me as not as good as previous episodes. I don't know, maybe I was in a weird mood.

So far, I think my favorite has been Shindig or Out of Gas. I'm really looking forward to Jaynestown, though (I read the premise). I've been quite pleasantly surprised by Adam Baldwin. He's very good, and his character is really well written.

I'm a bit concerned about that... after watching the trailer, it seems to me that the movie has turned into a "rockets and ray guns" mainstream sci-fi flick, with spaceship laser battles and wars against the forces of evil.

What's with Summer Glau ("River") and the kick boxing?

I wonder if Joss Whedon had to give up a great deal of his creative control in order to obtain financing for the movie?

The TV series was not about the sci-fi aspect of the show; it was about the people in the show, and if the trailer is true to the movie, it looks like Serenity has sold out to action, glitz, and glamor.

And then, there's always the question of how can Whedon do as much character development in the 105 minutes (or whatever) of the movie as he did in the 17 episodes that were made for TV? Can we realistically expect the movie to be that much better than the series?

Frankly, I don't see how it can even be as good. The movie has a pretty big standard to try and live up to. IMHO, Firefly was the second-best show in the history of Network Television.

It's been referred to as ballet-fu. I think it fits the character. She's more in control of her "abilities" by the time the movie picks up.

It still is about the characters. The trailer was cut in a way to show more action and pull in more non-Browncoats. We Browncoats already know that it's going to be more about the people, and less about action. Now, there probably is more action than would be in one of the average episodes to appeal to a broader audience, but Joss had full control of the movie, so it's still Whedonesque.

From the reviews I've read so far, it seems to be well received by both Browncoats and non-Browncoats alike. I think it'll do well.

Sixteen days and I'll know for sure.

BTW, there are three comic books coming out to fill in the gap between the series and this first movie. Three covers of each, so each of the nine main characters will be on a cover of their own. Mine are ordered.

That's about what I was thinking. I can't imagine what TV promos for the show were like. How do you put together a 10 to 30 second promo for character development?

I see we got you to order it then. Glad you enjoyed it. I don't think I'd heard from you about that 'til now. Or maybe I've just got a bad memory.

Oh, yes. I placed my order within minutes of finding out that the series was available on DVD.

I've since watched the whole series at least half a dozen times. It never seems to get old.

For me it was another example of "downloads encourage sales" thing: I downloaded a DivX rip of the original pilot ("Serenity"), and after watching it ordered the DVD set. It's currently in the mail.

I don't know how many of you watch Justice League Unlimited (sometimes I'm just a big kid), but for last weekend's episode, Nathan Fillion provided the voice of Vigilante. It must have been unusual to play a cowboy on a distant planet

Update: Firefly DVDs finally arrived another day (they already arrived once and got returned because I was not at home for several days; ordered again - the sale price has expired in the meantime - and used business address, just in case )

I have only seen the first two discs (I am rationing them ), and this is indeed not your average SciFi series. Thanks for recommending it!

Re: Serenity Sneak Preview Showings - 11/08/2005 19:41

I've been enjoying them again. My girlfriend was kind enough to get me such a geeky birthday present, and I've really enjoyed it. Plus there was one episode that I hadn't seen yet (Janestown).

Funny thing, though. I opened it up and was suprised to see that two of the discs had Zoë on the cover. Turns out that I had discs 1, 2, 4 and 4 The good news is that I was once again able to take advantage of Tower Records's amazing exchange policy. Opened, no receipt, faulty product, and they took it and gave me a new one. Thanks, Tower!

Soon? Isn't it opening over a month from now on September 30th?

Re: Serenity Sneak Preview Showings - 25/08/2005 16:45

Oh! Could be. I remembered the sneak preview on the 26th, and I thought it was August. I guess not.

Re: Serenity Sneak Preview Showings - 25/08/2005 17:20

Oh, was it August 26th? I assumed it was May 26th, since Tony posted it in May with no mention of a month.

In a perfect world it would be out already and I would have seen it several times by now...sigh...

Re: Serenity Sneak Preview Showings - 26/08/2005 06:10

Speaking of which, the second serenity trailer is up at the Apple Quicktime trailers site.

To clarify the thread for those who seem to be confused about dates and such:

The movie comes out near the end of September 2005 (30th, I believe), and what we were discussing here were sneak-preview showings that happened many months in advance, one of which I was lucky enough to get tickets for.

I'm still going to see the finished film when it comes out.

Re: Serenity Sneak Preview Showings - 26/08/2005 11:11

I prefered the first trailer, but I think they did a better job editing River's fight scene in the second one (which I believe is the one playing in theaters now).

I much prefered the ending to the first trailer, too.

Okay. Exceptionally cool.

Notice that it's Joss doing the voice of the examiner? :-)
