Years of wondering what exactly ARE the things in some peoples' avatars has finally led to another pointless fun thread.
So, to the following people (and more that I'm forgetting), what IS that in your avatar?
RobV, RobS, pgrzelak, ricin, peakmop, cwillenbrock... and so many more...
And if you have a confusing avatar that really needs explaining, please do, because I may not be the only one scratching my head,

Well mine's pretty obvious, but I'll tell anyway- it's just a picture of me playing my guitar that our rhythm guitar player took during a rehersal one day.

I tend to swap mine around a little. I used to have the "Wizard" character from Gauntlet II, captured from a MAME session for the purpose.
At the moment, I have #2 of The Kids Next Door, from the
cartoon of the same name. Number 2 (no, I refuse to spell it as they do in the series, thanks...) is the "2x4 technology operative" for "sector V" of the KND. He is very much the engineer type - knows what he is doing technically, not too brave, thinks he is funny when he is really not (bad puns are his specialty), that kind of thing.
Hmmm... That one has been up there a while. Perhaps it is time for something new...
Edit: And now for something a bit different - the Tech Support Sphere! Now if I could just get photos that would have the answers readable in a 65x75 window, I could animate the GIF and allow everyone to get answers to all their questions...

- A jar with some ricin in it.

My current one is a picture of me under an overhang 22 metres up at my local climbing centre, taken by the guy belaying for me...hmmm, wonder if that was a good idea

About as good idea as when I used to go climbing with Andrea my housemate at Uni. She was about 7 stone, I was about 13.5 stone. When I fell off if we were climbing at the local wall (and therefore not bothering to secure the belayer) we tended to meet each other half way...
I don't climb anymore, despite losing weight recently I'm still over 16 stone, which isn't exactly an asset when it comes to climbing. I even through my boot and harness away the other month, neither of which were ever going to fit me again.
And to get back onto topic, thankfully neither I or any of my friends had a camera at Uni. The world does not need pictures of me in climbing harness and pink boots !

A detail from a
piece of original comics art I own by Paul Chadwick. It was intended for the cover of his
Concrete: Think Like a Mountain trade paperback, but was replaced with a different piece that actually contained a, well, mountain. The piece I own was included as an interior plate, IIRC.

It's an orangutan (duh). I found it as one of the default selection of pictures you could choose for your user account in Mac OS X. But, it stopped being included with the OS at 10.2, I think.
I picked it because I like primates, and this particular one appeared exceptionally wise.

Mine is simply me and helmet, sitting on the summit of the Eichorn Pinnacle above Tuolumne Meadows, Yosemite National Park in California USA. That's the main summit of Cathedral Peak in the background.

Anybody who's met me will find this blindingly obvious but my avatar is a picture of me from an old student radio ID card.
I like it when people actually put a picture of themselves as their avatar, helps you know who you're conversing/arguing with.

Actually, I've forgotten what mine is (not what it looks like, but what it actually is). I know it's from an anime, but I can't remember its name. If anyone knows a lot about the show (Webroach?) would someone mind telling me what the character is really about?
Anyway, I thought it was a cool image, and it was a smaller file than my Stewie animation I had there earlier, so I figured that people here would appreciate that

Mine is just an eclipse, one you can pick here. I like wolves/moon etc so figured it would work.. I used to have a small pic of part of my tattoo (wolf head) i photoshoped but lost it a few formats ago..

Heh. Actually, it surprises a lot of my fellow Japanese students, but I'm really not too much into anime. I like some of it, but it's never really done as much for me as live-action Japanese film. I'll check with a few friends, though; they may know.
My avatar is Gally from the manga "Battle Angel Alita", one of the few anime I've ever really been into. It used to be the "rant" icon on my old website.
Maybe time for a new avatar. Hrmm....

Ha, and all along I thought it was Kenshin Himura. It looked like there was an X on the left cheek I've been meaning to watch more Japanese film. For the time being, anime satisfies my love of fantasy stories, even when I can't understand what they're talking about. There are definitely types of anime that I'm not really into.
Aha! As I was writing this post, I remembered what anime my avatar is from. The title is not exactly easy to remember: .hack//SIGN
I still have no clue what the hell is going on in that anime series. It's basically a fantasy world like a lot of anime, but the twist is it's really an MMORPG where the players are almost totally immersed into the world. At the end of the series, I had no friggin' clue what was going on, and I have little to no idea what the significance of my avatar's character was. I pretty much just know that his name is Maha.

ricin: Haha, which are some of the same avatars used by Drakino, and previously used by Mach (Nemo) and others. Well, unless my browser just isn't showing it right.... like when it shows the top half of the yellow guy and a couple of gulls on the bottom...

My username used to be Meatballman. I got my brother, who's a graphic designer/artist to sketch me up a quick caped-crusader meatball. When I changed my username, I left the old avatar so that people could connect my new name with me.

My avatar came from O Brother, Where Art Thou (actually, pilfered from the movie's web site), but its origins go back to one of those cheesy name games at some summer program or other while I was in high school. You were supposed to come up with an adjective that began with the same letter as your first name that somehow described you. The irony of "DapperDan", of course, is that I generally avoid dressing up whenever possible.

That's why I'm against having the name change feature turned on to begin with. A couple of people have changed and I can remember who they used to be, but certainly not all.

Well, I like the feature because it allowed me to finally change the case of my name. The letters and numbers stayed, but all those capital letters dropped case. I've thought about dropping the 17, too...

Two days after Amersfoort, 2004, it was late at night and I had drunk a few beers (as one does). The two boys were asleep in the bedroom next door. I plugged the TV output cable into the iXUS that I had been given at the meet as a special surprise. I was looking at the screen of the TV with the camera in my right hand pointing up at my face: accidentally pressed the exposure button and BING! my first ever digital photo. That's me in profile, in low lighting, loooking at the TV screen.
It seemed appropriate to use it as my avatar here, friends
