Does anyone have one of these printers and if so what is your impression of it? My old HP printer is starting to have problems and I really need something to at least print, fax and copy and bought the 3310 but so far I haven't opened it. I got a good price on it but it still is more than I thought to spend on a printer and want to know if it's worth opening or am I better off taking it back.

I have not used this printer, but I have used similar ones.

Did you consider a laser printer instead? Laser printer/fax/copiers have really come down in price. The consumables (toner vs. ink) are much, much cheaper. The prints don't smear. They are fast and quiet.

Unless you absolutely need color, I would strongly suggest considering an HP all-in-one laser product.

FWIW,

I need to be able to print in color and also like the idea of printing photos.

IMHO The combo all in one devices work, but generally are not great at any one task. Typically slow at all of them.

The part I can't stomach is if one function breaks down, soft or hardware wise, what do you do then.

It may not be a big deal if your just printing an occasional photo for the fun of it, but I've yet to see an all in one that prints half as well as a dedicated photo printer. The dedicated units normally use different inks which are needed for good prints.

Better than using an inkjet at all would be to use one of the little dye-sub photo printers. Getting a nice little affordable $150 one kind of limits your options to 4 x 6 prints, but quality is really quite amazing. Then get a laser for the printer/fax part. Without even doing the math, I would guess that the per page savings from getting the laser would pay for the extra photo printer.

edit: of course, that doesn't address the idea of what to do when you need to print something in color that's not a photo...

Those little dye-sub things are cute, but modern photo inkjets have no problem achieving the same, or possibly better, quality. The dye-subs should be cheaper to run, though, and no more "clogged heads" either. But are they?
