cdfs.vxd for win xp? - 24/02/2006 05:13

Is there such a thing, I used this trick when I had Win 98. Been trying to find a similiar trick for Win XP but XP doesn't have such a file to replace. I know XP has support for burning but liked the trick in Win 98.

It'd probably help if you told us what replacement cdfs.vxd you were using and what it did. The one I see immediately presents CD tracks as WAV files (sort of a transparent ripper, I guess), but that doesn't sound like what you're talking about.

I think that's EXACTLY what he's talking about. That's the only reason I ever replaced the CDFS.VXD on my win98 box.

But how does XP having CD burning built in have any bearing on that?

Dunno. But I don't know what else he could be talking about.

Sounds like a good way to get low quality rips and a messed up XP system.

Well, the device driver in question only worked on Win98, but when I used it in that environment, it didn't seem to mess up my system. It worked quite well. You could do things like point LAME directly at the files and get MP3's out the back end. It was quite nice.

You wouldn't have very accurate rips however unless it was as clever as EAC which I doubt...

...and win98's virtual device driver management != winXP's virtual device driver management.

That's exactly what I was looking for, Tony's website had such a file for Win 98.
When I had Win 98 I liked being able to explore the CD drive directly as .wav files instead of the .cda which is a shortcut. You could choose 22hz or 44hz mono or stereo. It worked great for me in Win 98.

For most CDs, you didn't really need to be as clever as EAC. I remember it working quite well.
