Dye sub printer mods?

I know some of you guys have dye sub printers for photos. Does anyone know of one that can print on blank plastic ID cards? I imagine the printer in question would need a straight paper path.

All the ID card printers cost at least $800. I don't know why those would be so much when there are lots of cheap personal photo printers out there.

Hi Touch Imaging has a dye sub for IDs.

I have one of their photo printers (730PS) and I'm pretty happy with the printer. The bundled software is not good, but the printer itself is excellent.

I don't mean ID-sized photos. I mean those plastic ID cards. Like this one.

Okay. My google-fu is weak today. I understand CMYK. What is the last color panel in CMYKL?

At a wild guess, maybe a transparent varnish or coating of some nature?

The Magicard web site lists consumables for the same printer that Rob linked to. They list the ribbons as being "YMCKO". Googling for that reveals:

Quote:
YMCKO = Y = Yellow, M = Magenta, C = Cyan,
K = Black, O = Overlay/Laminate
Yellow, Magenta, Cyan & Black make up a full
colour image whilst "Overlay" adds a
clear varnish on top to prevent the image from rubbing off.

If you're interested in that printer, Leyland isn't too far from me. If I can help out with collection/postage let me know.

I'm not interested in that specific printer. It just happens to be one that shows the type of card it produces in the auction pic. Thanks though....
