Document Imaging System recommendations?

Document Imaging System recommendations? - 05/04/2006 16:15

I need advice on Document Imaging Systems. I work for a company that deals with A LOT of paperwork. Bank Statements, state reports, legal documents, all sorts of crap. We looked into getting a professional company to handle it but apparantly these companies have some huge setup fee and then its 25 cents a page -- a little much.

I'm looking for input on Document Imaging Systems like the Canon CD4070 or some such device. I want a simple way to get all of our paperwork in a digital format. One person in the office would be handling all of it. As we get new documents in, I'd like her to be able to scan them and archive them in some sort of easily searchable format. The documents should be easy to scan, retrieve and search. I'll add that I dont expect more than 5 people to be accessing the documents.

This Canon is like $8,000 so any input would be greatly appreciated!

Are you wanting images or character-recognition-based regeneration into PDFs or whatever?

We have a Brother MFC-8440 that seems to work pretty well, especially for $400.

Okay. I just looked at the thing you posted, and the Brother I mention isn't nearly a competitor. But you might not need what that Canon offers.

Well, somewhere in between. At the very least, we'd like the images, but it would be great if we could get searchable PDFs or some such thing. I just called DISUSA and this company charges $13,000 for their software plus you have to buy the scanner. They apparantly have some spectacular tagging and retrieval system. There has got to be something easier.

Gonna look at that Brother...

The fujitsu snapscan was posted here earlier and it seems like it fits you needs perfectly. Hugo described how he had it set up to save the PDF images with the OCR'd text below for searchability.

It doesn't do TWAIN at all, but if it fits your needs it does get great reviews.

I heard the SnapScan name tossed around in my research...This might be what we're looking for. Off to do more reserach...

We use PaperVision and Paperflow at work. It is pretty nice, very configurable, but expensive.
