History going in the dumpster... - 17/05/2006 21:03

An email sent out at work:
Quote:
free:

Vintage/antique/old Magnavox table top record player.
(does not work, you can repair, or gut it and put in new system)

free:

antique records. 1900's to 1950's
Les Paul, Bing Crosby, Johnnie Ray, Tony Martin, and many other's I've
never heard of. About 12 books/collections. I'd like to limit one per
customer. Unless nobody wants them.

The player gets power, but doesn't spin at the right speed -- for either 16(!), 33, 45, or S-78, and it buzzes something fierce.

Aside from a few folks who have taken some for nostalgia, they're just sitting there. It makes me sad to think that single-sided platters from 1904 are just going to end up in the dumpster.

The 1904s are "Little Wonder", I'll bet.

I'll come get them. I'm in Fullerton.

Thanks,

I know someone with a player for these records that would love these.

Let me know if you still have them!

Whoops. I misread the labels on the "1904" platters -- that was the date of a patent. I don't see a recording date anywhere on them, now that I've taken a second look.

The single-sided platters are "Red Seal" Victor and Victrola labels, so, without looking at the relevant Red Seal bible, the best I can say is they date between 1903 and 1925.

PM me if you still want them, or want a list of the albums. Heck, if you want the rest of the collection that's left, I can snag them for you, too.

Yeah, they're still sitting here. I'm not really inclined to ship them anywhere, though -- otherwise, I'd send them up to a former workmate, who I credit with awakening my interest in a wide variety of music (as opposed to "the standard radio playlist").

Edit: Ack! In the last 10 minutes, they've all disappeared, save the one book of single-sided Red Label records, which I had at my desk for research purposes.

In another 10 minutes, you'll probably find them on eBay fetching big bucks!!

Reminds me of my old (but not ancient) inherited record collection. Wide groove, thick platter, dual sided records of classical symphonies. Yup, that's like 3 platters for a Beethoven symphony. 10 mins per side?

Erk. That's now gone, too. There's another guy that snagged the Magnavox -- one of his hobbies is repairing antique audio equipment -- so I gave them to him. It was the only S-78 records in the group, so I figured he might need them for testing the restored turntable.

Nah. The guy that was giving them away looked on Ebay. They're only going for a couple bucks each. Shipping the darn things is too costly, except for the rare mint condition platters, and these weren't what I'd describe as mint. They looked pretty playable, but they had some scuff marks, and didn't have the original sleeves.
