Quick question: when using an LCD is it better for your eyes to have background lights on or off? Or does it matter?

If it's darkish in the room, it's better to have them on I find. If they are off I find I get eye strain

I don't think it depends on display technology, I've always heard that you should match the display brightness and the lighting around the display to be as easy as possible on your eyes.
