No sound from youtube

No sound from youtube - 21/09/2006 01:22

I am getting no sound from youtube or google video but I do get sound from any video or audio I play from the computer like with wmp10 or quicktime.

This happens with IE and firefox.

Also the volume control has vanished from the system tray even though the option to have it there is selected in the control panel.

If I go to the sound control panel all the volumes are maxxed out.

This is on a Panasonic R5 laptop with some kind of sigmatel audio.

Any ideas ?

I had a similar problem. It was really strange. I think WMP, QT, Google Video (desktop app) all worked fine, but flash audio in IE and FF wouldn't work, as well as system sounds. I also couldn't choose an audio device in the control panel.

After doing some searching, the fix for it was to download the K-lite Codec Pack. After it installs, goto the tools folder where you installed K-lite and run fixcodecs.exe. There will be some checkboxes, and I believe you have to check "fix system sounds".

I tried a lot of things before stumbling across this solution. It's a strange problem, but this worked. I think it has something to do with the registry.

Installing that did not fix the youtube problem but I now can play mpeg4 with wmp10 so that is nice.

You tube converts its videos to Flash doesn't it? I'm pretty sure it does. Have you tried reinstalling the Flash Player?

Re: No sound from youtube - 21/09/2006 20:07

Is it just flash videos that have no sound? Do other streaming formats that play within the browser work?

Can you hear this? http://www.devilducky.com/media/46386/

It appears to be just flash I can hear the clip you linked to. It was using quicktime.

Weird :S

Googling "No sound on You Tube" reveals many people with the same problem. I've had a trawl through but no definite solutions as yet.

Re: No sound from youtube - 21/09/2006 20:32

Yay I fixed it thanks for the suggestions.

here is how it was a posting on an adobe fourm I found about 6 pages deep on the google search for no sound from youtube:

Alright the problem is really the mapping of wavemapper in Windows registry as reported by one member of the forum. All you need to do is to open registry editor by going to Start menu, Run, typing regedit and then Enter. After that, in the registry editor, walk yourself through the tree in the left pane, till you reach

My Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Drivers32

And then on the right pane, right click and click on New, select String value, enter "wavemapper" (without quots of course), ENTER, type "msacm32.drv", ENTER.

Close the editor. No need to restart. Video on Google and YouTube et al would work fine now.

Thanks to the member who pointed out the key. I just mentioned the procedure.

Re: No sound from youtube - 24/09/2006 18:58

Yeah, that's been out for a few weeks. I didn't know the album wasn't even out yet.

Sadly, I haven't bought a Weird Al album since Off the Deep End. Up until then I had every one of them on cassette tape. I still like the guy, I just haven't found him as funny in recent years. This new stuff is pretty good, though.

I have them all on CD he only makes on every few years so I figure what the heck. This one is supposed to come with some extra disc with videos I guess.

Re: No sound from youtube - 29/09/2006 00:09

I got the new Weird Al today and it is pretty good there are a couple bad ones but I like it. There is one song called virus alert that I like and it sounds familiar but I can't remember what it sounds like. If anyone else got the album or wants to go find virus alert and let me know what it reminds you of it would be great.

Re: No sound from youtube - 05/10/2006 17:06

I am having a video problem with Youtube. I figured this would be a good place to ask about it.

I get these odd artifacts that are hard to describe, but I've tried to capture them in the attached screen capture. Any ideas?

*edit*
Damn! It doesn't convey! That's really odd. They were there when I pasted it into PSP, but now when I look at the image after attaching it to the post, it looks correct! This is odd...

Re: No sound from youtube - 05/10/2006 17:19

Its not just compression artifacts is it? Either that the uploader has caused or that You Tube caused during conversion to Flash?
Posted by: Dignan

Re: No sound from youtube - 05/10/2006 18:02

No no, I'd know what compression artifacts look like. This is something else. Besides, compression artifacts would show up in a screencap.

This is like random, "squiggly" lines. I'm guessing it has more to do with my display adapter on my laptop making things look strange. I'll have to work on it a little more...

What about files played locally? Same artifacts?

Tried this, I already had this.

I also did the K-Lite fix and no results. This is a very frusterating problem, I must have tried a hundred solutions posted around the web by now. If anyone has more suggestions I could sure try them, because it is annoying not being able to hear you tube.

If you play a local file with Windows Media Player, can you hear sound then?

Aye, it is quite the annoying thing, this is so common on so many message boards, I am beggining to wonder why I post. Someone somewhere is really not earning their paychecque... I am sure you will know what I mean if you search tieio on google, all me, I have been doing software for a long time and this is the only thing pissing me off.

Re: No sound from youtube - 27/01/2008 02:21

I had a similar problem with a client's PC - no sound with GoogleVideo or YouTube but Windows Media Player and QuickTime worked fine. I tried the wavemapper registry thing and it didn't make any difference. Uninstalling and reinstalling Flash (with a reboot inbetween) and using the Flash uninstall tool and the stand-alone Flash installer didn't work either.

After trying everything I could think of, I finally realised that whenever I rebooted the computer, I could hear the "Start Windows" startup music but it seemed to have the last note or two clipped off. So I went to Start > Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices > Sound tab and tried playing some of the sounds in the "Program events" box and NONE of them worked (not even the "Start Windows" startup music!). I noticed at this point that there was nothing in the "Sound scheme" box either - I tried changing it to Windows Default but still no difference to the sounds.

Finally I reasoned that if the Windows default sounds weren't working, then this had to be more than just a problem with Flash (ie, a problem with the Windows installation) so I downloaded the sound card driver for this PC's motherboard (if you've got the original motherboard driver disc then you're going to be in luck), uninstalled the sound driver that was already installed via Add/Remove programs, rebooted the computer and installed the new driver and hey presto!, the sound worked for EVERYTHING!
