Can you help me find a light bulb? (USA) - 24/04/2007 17:44

I need to replace some bulbs in a fixture above my kitchen sink. The bulbs I'm replacing are 50w halogen flood types with a GU10 base.

I'd like to replace these with a compact fluorescent type. They seem to be prevalent in the UK as google comes up with resellers there. Right now the fixture is on a dimmer, but that can be swapped out. Can anyone find them in the USA? The local Home Depot only had a 35W equivalent.

Have you looked for LED-based bulbs? For that size, they seem more common. Of course, you may not want LED.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'm not sure if I'm ready to plunk down $38 a bulb for the LEDs yet. I need five of them for this fixture. Here is the only place I've sourced the LED lights so far:

It seems that the life on the halogen ones is 2000-4000 hours. If the estimate on the LED one of 100,000 hours is accurate, that might not be such a bad investment.

Amazon seems to have a few GU10 LED bulbs.

Good suggestion, but I think these will be too dim for use in the kitchen. I never check Amazon for these things!

I bought this house from an older couple and nothing is at all energy / environmentally efficient. The shower heads that were in the shower emptied out the 40 gallon hot water heater in just a few minutes! Old toilets, single pane jalousie windows, etc...
