Wow! That's a nice clean entry. Your neighbour should be able to patch that up without much problem! wink

Seriously though: I hope nobody got hurt.

I just want to know how your tree opened up that wormhole (or space-time rift or whatever you want to call it)?

Because I trust the first picture is from 2008, but the shot of the interior of your neighbor's house is clearly from the 1960's. wink

Sucks!

My house is surrounded by trees. I have a feeling my time will come as well.

A timely warning. They'll kill us all, I tell you -- kill us all!

Oh man, don’t get me started on those damn things (OK bad pun). They’ve built several damns on my property and the nearby forest and have killed tons of old growth cedar trees. These trees won’t come back either since deers seem to now out number ants around here and love to eat cedar saplings.

Since no one wears fur anymore these little critters are out of control.

Re: CRASH!!!!! - 19/06/2008 12:43

The event woke us up at about 05:45 this morning. Our nice (still?) neighbours were away at their summer cottage, so nobody inside to be injured or shocked by the noise.

The tree is now off of their house and being chipped away into mulch, and our neighbours are on their way home.

The branch that came into their living room did so rather neatly, midway between the roof trusses, so that part should be an easy repair.

The corner of their house (top photo) will be trickier to repair.

When I read the title I assumed it was IT related, but then I remembered you don't run Windows! smile

Craziness. What happened? Blow-down?

The tree has always had a bit of a lean to (or fro?) it. But it's ash (a very strong, springy hardwood), and the tree inspectors always declared it healthy.

But unbeknownst to all, the root system was rotting away under the clay soil, and today, after a LOT of rain, it just snapped about 18" below ground.

CRASH!!!!!

So it's gone now, and its mate is also in the chipper.

Just some cleanup left to do .. oh, and eventually some proper repairs to our neighbour's roof. For now, I've made it all nice and weather/rodent proof again, but clearly that's just a temporary fix.

I'd have thought you'd have had it into the workshop and be turning out ash docks by the time they got home ... surely you kept some lumps?

Re: CRASH!!!!! - 19/06/2008 16:44

Heh.. we still have some ash lumber from the last time one of our ash trees was removed. smile

For these two, we are salvaging some smaller bits, but even most of those are destined for the fireplace. Shame really, as there's maybe 400bd.ft of usable lumber in the two trunks.

Things are just a bit hectic this week (leaving soon for the UK) to deal with a few tons of wet lumber, so we're having the treefolk haul nearly all of it away.

Wouldn't Louisville Slugger, Rawlings, or Mash Bats (for you Canadians) be interested in it? I hear there's a new ash pest going around.

Tree: hey House, how ya doing?

House: keepers are away, left me all alone.

Tree: awwww, sounds like somebody needs a hug.
