A gift from the President

A gift from the President - 19/03/2009 06:27

I started the day chuckling on this one from this morning's paper: Obama gave Gordon Brown 25 classic American films on DVD - when Gordon sat down, with his popcorn, at No. 10 Downing Street, all he got on screen was the wrong region message. Apparently "Clueless" wasn't one of them. Still, these companies have to protect their copyright - best that our leaders should set an example!

I commented on that (or NTSC/PAL) being a possibility when the gift was announced. Just a cherry on top of the gift inequality.

For those who don't know, Obama gave Brown said set of American movies. Brown gave Obama an ornamental pen holder made from the wood of the sister ship to the anti-slave ship that Obama's presidential desk is made of.

I never did persuade my mother that not being able to make the VHS of her American grandchildren work in the UK was anything other than me being unhelpful, until the day she saw an ad. for doing the conversion - when she got the quote, she decided to do without!

I'm not certain how things work in reality, but I believe that in the computer world NTSC vs PAL should not be an issue.

keyword: should

All that aside, Bitt's description of the two gifts certainly shows an inequality in the exchange.

What we didn't tell you was that Gordon fashioned the pen holder with his penknife on the way over - times are hard!

Hey, at least it went over better than the gift Hillary gave the Russian foreign minister.

Quote:
"I would like to present you with a little gift that represents what President Obama and Vice President Biden and I have been saying and that is: 'We want to reset our relationship and so we will do it together.'"

Clinton, laughing, added, "We worked hard to get the right Russian word. Do you think we got it?" she asked Lavrov.

"You got it wrong," Lavrov said." Both diplomats laughed. "It should be "perezagruzka" (the Russian word for reset,) Lavrov said. "This says 'peregruzka,' which means 'overcharged.'"

She should have totally put the word for "launched nukes" on there, instead.

Me too (Vice-Versa), but I can only take the newspaper reports at face value (Apart from the popcorn!)

That was my thought, too.
