Is there any way to tame the number of open tasks w/o having to explicitly close each one?

There is no need to tame the number of tasks. The list doesn't show you which apps are using resources, just which have been run.

Just make sure you close any truly background ones (tomtom, skype to name two) when you are finished with them and stop worrying about the rest.
