Google Doodle honors Les Paul

Google Doodle honors Les Paul - 09/06/2011 16:40

Who else would appreciate music and computers more than the empeg community! I thought of you when I saw today's Google Doodle; a live guitar which can be played AND recorded. (for the archive, it will be here by July 2011).

Here's a little song I wrote. Due to recording length constraints, it's in three parts. Open them in three tabs, then play them sequentially:
FireFox31's Mellow Doodle 1
FireFox31's Mellow Doodle 2
FireFox31's Mellow Doodle 3

Oh, and the URL which the shortener expands to contains the "code" of the song. Try hacking it to see what happens. Big time bonus points to anyone who can figure out the syntax. Probably a hash, so not easy to reverse. How else could it store time in such a "short" string.

Take care.

I saw that! So very cool. They've been going pretty nuts with the HTML5 doodles recently, but this is one of the more impressive ones. The fact you can record your tunes is really neat.

ps- I liked your tune smile

How does the record/playback work? I press the "keyboard" thingie and it turns red, but that's about it for me here.

Thanks

Click the black Record button, then you can strum with the mouse or the keyboard keys. Click Record to stop recording. It will start flashing when you're running out of time, then stop soon after.

Worked for me with Firefox 3.6 on Windows.

Oh, and hello everyone. Yes, I've been away from the BBS for too long.

No such button that I can see.
Apparently the record feature was rare, and got removed mid-day or something.

It's still there for me. The black rectangle below where the second g would be. I didn't know what it was until it was pointed out in this thread.

It's there right now for me, yesterday the button in that position was the "keyboard play" feature.

Just google it -- I found/read some articles saying that not all views of the site offered the "record" capability.

Sure enough, it's there (with record button) on google.com today, from my location at least. Yesterday there was no record button at google.com from here, nor at google.ca.

Cheers

It's weird how Google offers different views to different people. I didn't see "Keyboard Play", only considering the keyboard as an option when I clicked "Record" and saw a tiny keyboard icon in the short url field.

I'm curious to know Google's plan for keeping ALL the short URLs that must have been generated by the Record function. Likely most are accidental, a bunch are noise, and a very few are actual songs. 24 hours can create a lot of short URLs that Google may "promise to keep around forever" like other URL shorteners.

Um, and the Doodle is still there for a second day? That's a first, except for the week long ones like Sesame Street and the Olympics.

Wasn't the pac-man one up for more than one day?

Is it normal that the audio is missing on an iPad?

Yes, due to Google using Flash for the sound.

Don't worry, it goes to a recorded tune... It wasn't the Rick Astley song either, as far as I could tell. smile

Considering that people only had 2 days practice, some of these are pretty well done.

Re: Google Doodle honors Les Paul - 14/06/2011 11:58

I had no idea there was any sound - the only times I looked at it was when someone sent me the link (as I never visit the google front page), and it appeared to just be an image, so I wasn't overly impressed.

I'll try and get a look later. Sounds cool.

I only discovered there was sound by accident, when I moused over it to get the pop-up to tell me what the doodle was in honor of.
