Wireless fax line?

I'm helping out a church with some technology issues. As of last week they had a threshold with two cables running across it: a phone cord and an ethernet cable.

Last week I re-ran the ethernet cable (with MUCH difficulty) and it looks much better now. However, the phone cord runs a different path and cannot be run the same way. There really aren't any options to run this cord through the walls or any other direction across the room, and they need it to get from the phone jack to their copier so they can use it as a fax.

I'm worried about using those powerline phone jacks because this church has old wiring and I don't think it would work well. Are there any other options?

Well, you can TRY the powerline method. If it works, good. Old wiring sometimes is still OK.

One would need to read the powerline device specifications carefully as facsimile signals use a larger bandwidth that typical voice quality requires.

Perhaps the phone wiring can be re-routed via the exterior of the building to get where it needs to go?

If the ethernet connection isn't using all four pairs, you could use an adapter plug at both ends to steal a pair on the existing ethernet run.

That one seems to have an odd shaped socket.

Either one will work just fine. RJ45 sockets accept RJ11 plugs, no problem. The second *first* one appears to have a hardwired RJ11 plug, which won't work in this situation (needs fully-wired RJ45 plug).

The left socket in this product this product appears to have the retention clip on the side, not opposite the pins. So not a standard RJ45 or RJ11.

I'm not sure this is going to be possible. The long ethernet run that I made connects to switches. The far switch handles the copier and a wireless access point. Would not all pairs really be necessary?

10Mbit and 100Mbit Ethernet use two pairs; Gbit Ethernet uses four. Almost all Gbit hardware will fall back to 100Mbit if needed, so unless the church needs tons of bandwidth between those two switches, you would be OK stealing two of the pairs for voice.

Agreed. Sadly, faxing is apparently still a necessity in this world because not everyone has caught up. It baffles me that in this day and age, people still pay $20 a month for a second phone line in their homes for faxing.
