Fiber enclosure - 21/04/2016 21:01

I help out my family's church with their tech stuff, and they want to protect a fiber line that was put in a while back. At the moment, the cable just goes into the rack and the terminated ends just sit exposed. Recently some work was done in the rack and the fiber lines were damaged and had to be redone.

I'd like to remove the line from the rack and place the end of the cable and the fiber to ethernet converter in an enclosure of some kind. I'm trying to find that enclosure, but I'm not sure what to call what I'm looking for. Any suggestions?

Not sure I understand exactly, but why not using a fiber patch panel, still IN the rack? Fiber would terminate IN the patch panel (the back of it) and would be sufficiently protected (with some care in routing the cable to the patch, I mean), when sliding rack units in and out of the rack. Or, am I missing the point?

That would be fine too, I suppose, as long as the cable could be secured well enough. Do you have an example of this?

Here's a FO patch panel.

Then you'll need to buy FO patch cords to be connected at the front of it. Just like Ethernet patch panel and patch cords. You have to go through the whole installation of the patch panel, but once that is done, usually FO runs are relatively safe and all you end up moving, disconnecting, reconnecting, rerouting etc is the patch cords in front. Again, i am not sure this is what you're looking for. I'll take a picture of our server room later on, but it won't be much clearer than this.

So something like this would work for me? I gather there are different connector types, but I believe the fiber is already terminated for SC, and that's what's on the converter we have, so I'd rather stick with that.

As long as I can securely tie down that fiber cable inside the rack mounting, I'm fine with going this route.

Yes, something like that. And yes, there are several connector types.

Not sure how it would work inside the patch panel with already terminated fiber optics cables, though. We always had FO terminated inside the patch panel...
