Roving 802.11b Scanner - 28/11/2001 16:11

I've read here that the Apple Airport was tested and works. Has anyone installed this? How about porting: http://www.ex-parrot.com/~chris/driftnet/ which is like the mac EtherPeg program. Is there software out there that will just tell you when you are in range (sense) an 802.11b network. This would make a great roving packet dectection system.

Whoa, cool, that driftnet/etherpeg program looks freaking awesome!

Gotta find a win32 version... heh...

Already done, sorta.

Try doing a google search for Net stumbler.

It'll let you war sniff with a GPS, so you know where to come back to.

Interesting. Thanks for that link.

I was more interested in sniffing my department's wired network, and Net Stumbler only works with wireless cards.

Still, very useful for when I finally get an 802.11 card working in my wife's laptop (the Linksys one sucked and wouldn't work with our router). Thanks.

Linux and any number of packages... ethereal, ntop....

The Lucent cards are more than worth their price. Most of the cheaper cards use a cheaper radio, which causes the noise floor to be about -72db, the lucents are ~ -92db, so they will work in worse conditions without problems.

I tried a few linksys's.... returned them quickly.

Right. I was specifically talking about Win32. I am aware that there are linux programs that will do it.

Yes, the replacement card will be either a Lucent or Orinoco unit, for that very reason.

The Linksys wireless card problem surprised me, since I have had very good luck in the past with their other products. Their BEFSR11 and BEFSR41 routers are great.

Hi Tony.

Ethereal is also available for Win32 systems, with a GUI and it is working quite well on my Win2000 system. Look at http://www.ethereal.com.

Yeah, I think I tried looking at ethereal once and decided that the installation of the extra packet capture packages was too complex and intrusive and decided I'd wait for someone to write an integrated solution.
