WWWThreads - 04/01/2002 09:36

Sorry if this has been brought up already, but I didn't find it anywhere on here.

I was just wondering if anyone noticed that WWWThreads has been bought by Infopop, makers of what seems to be the most popular bbs system, the UBB.

I find it somewhat interesting that they would want a new system. I guess it's just a good way of controlling your competition. WWWThreads is the only message board system that I can tolerate aside from the UBB, so I guess it's natural that the two are owned by the same company now. Infopop says that they'll continue supporting the "UBBThreads" as it's now called, but then again, Sonicblue said they'd continue to support the "Riocar"

If you look carefully, this forum is running UBThreads

Um, yeah. I'm aware. UBBThreads is just a rename of the WWWThreads. It's the same thing. That's why I brought it up.

I like this one better because it is the only one I have seen that takes you right to the new messages in a post

Re: WWWThreads - 04/01/2002 19:58

Infopop bought it a while back. And Paul must have just updated the version within the past two days.

I can already see some UBB ugliness. It automatically converts text smileys to graphics now. I hate that. If I want to put a UBB-code smiley I'll do it. But sometimes I just want to end a braced comment with a text smiley.

I almost spit out my food laughing at that one. that's gotta be the sickest user name on the bbs

right now it's "monkeyboy"

Re: WWWThreads - 04/01/2002 22:06

Yeah, I was afraid that the WWWthreads stuff would get corrupted by the UBB people, and the automatic-smiley conversion sounds like the first step down a big slippery slope into awfulness. You just can't imagine how much I hate the UBB system compared to the WWWThreads system.

We can only hope that this last upgrade fixed the "unread posts" bug. If it doesn't, we'll have to consider asking Paul to NOT upgrade the board unless that bug is specifically fixed in the upgrade, and then not upgrade it again after that.

Never [censored] mind. Just happened to me.

Re: WWWThreads - 05/01/2002 01:59

Unfortunatly this new upgrade also dosen't like my iPaq. I try to login, and get an error saying I didn't fill something out. "The most likely cause is that your browser is not accepting cookies." Umm, well I know cookies work in PocketIE, and it worked on the old software.

How receptive is Infopop to bug reports?

Another slick new feature is when you view "Who's Online" you also get to see what post/thread that user is reading...seems almost invasive, yet I think I like it...

If anything the development of the threads BBS now seems to be moving faster than ever before.

This was in the changelog:

Fixed a post tracking bug that prevented posts from being marked as new until the user visited each forum.

Oh dear. Did you ever get any follow up to your bug reports?

Cheers

Re: WWWThreads - 05/01/2002 06:14

Normally quite good if something is broken. Not so much luck with the user tracking bug!

Try the good old delete all your cookies to see if that fixes it as I remember seeing that there is now a cookie_path parameter which may be causing the problem.

Re: WWWThreads - 05/01/2002 06:21

My main reason for upgrading was for a few performance fixes.

Also this release has the board rules which users have to accept be registering.

The admin interface is also much imporved which will mean the admins have more control and can update things like the quick links above when I'm not around!

Many of the major UBB type changes you can turn off - like the new option to list the moderators on the main page which I turned off.

Hopefully we can reap the benefit of new features without upsetting too many ppl. Please keep the feedback coming.

Re: WWWThreads - 05/01/2002 10:41

Personally, I can do without seeing the name of the newest member listed at the top.

I also can't find a way to mark a thread as a "reminder" item - only favourite.

If you can forward a suggestion to the infopop guys, my #1 would be to colour threads that I have posted in in another colour. Or automatically track (on the BBS, not through email) threads that I have posted to. When I see that many threads have new posts, my primary concern if following through the ones I've already participated in. That's easy when there are only a handful of threads, but very hard when you come online to find 200 new messages in 100 new threads.

Oh, I dunno... I've always been sort of partial to "Fogduck" :-)
