802.11b actually works pretty well... - 25/01/2002 04:22

Well, here I am sitting the "quiet room" in Changi Airport in Singapore, waiting to board the next leg of my journey to Tasmania for a holiday. I had a 10-hour stopover between flights, so I went to SimLim Square (bloody AMAZING! I'm never seen so much electronics in one place before in my life!), where I picked up a couple of Orinoco Silver cards cheap.

Bored, back at the airport, I installed one in my laptop, and the first thing that happens is it connects to the internal LAN gateway with a proud message of instant free internet So here we are.

Not wildly quick, but with the number of computers that must be connected to it, and the area if covers (pretty much the entire airport main building), not too bad. I'm moderately impressed.

PS Any empeg owners in Hobart, Tasmania, or the nearish area?

At the current exchange rate, 70 GPB. I got two, and on the way back I may buy a couple more.

I'll have one off you for that price. How much cash have you got on you?
