ftp problems - 17/02/2002 16:38
Hey everyone I am trying to upload pictures to my ftp server for my personal web site. No matter what program I use, it stops at about 13% into the file transfer and hangs. This is only the case though for picture files, i.e. gifs and jpgs. When I transfer .htm files it works fine. Why is it doing this?

oh I forgot to mention. The upload speed also descreases gradually when it hangs at 13%. It just gets lower and lower and the progress meter doesn't move on uploading the picture.

Are your picture files a lot bigger than your text HTML files? I'm assuming yes. So the slowdown and hang is probably related to file size. Sounds like a problem with the server. Try throwing files up somewhere else as a test.
Oh, and make sure your FTP client is set to auto or binary mode. Not that I've had a transfer stall out when set incorrectly.

Could be a problem with an intervening router and Path MTU Discovery. Read
http://www.worldgate.com/~marcs/mtu/ and see if that makes any sense. You could try disabling PMTU-D on your workstation and see if that fixes it. I'm not sure that this is the problem, but it might be.

my images are about 60k, not huge by any means. I have uploaded images much larger before. I guess it is perhaps a server problem. Where else can I FTP to though as a test?

tried to upload on a leech ftp mp3 server and all went well. I guess it is crappy earthlink's server problems. Thanks to all for helping. I have to go call them now.
