New car MP3 player... ooooohhhhhh! - 12/03/2002 14:50

Haven't seen this one before. Dension DMP3-A1 costs $549 with 160GB Drive?!?!?!?!? Seems Rio's dumping of the RioCar was not in err...

3.5" drive...... are these things available?

(scratching head...)

Re: New car MP3 player... ooooohhhhhh! - 12/03/2002 14:58

are these things available?

If you go into their online store (I created a user account named "[email protected]" with a password of "foobar" just so I could browse there, you can use it if you want), they say "in stock".

So yeah, I guess they are available.

They seem interesting, but they have the same restrictions as the Neo. Deep car cage prevents in-dash mounting for many cars, 3.5" drives aren't suited to mobile use, etc.

Re: New car MP3 player... ooooohhhhhh! - 12/03/2002 14:59

If it has been reviewed i would tend to think it is available or will be shortly. 3.5 drive is obviously not a good choice for people "in the know," but this should put a significant dent in Neo's business.

Re: New car MP3 player... ooooohhhhhh! - 12/03/2002 15:05

Except for the drive size... this seems pretty well thought out. You can even get a 2nd display to mount in the back seat! And docks in a PC.... wow.

The prices for accessories seem too good to be true.

What would prevent someone from getting 2.5" drive + adapter and fitting it in?

Nothing, except that the whole point of doing a 3.5" drive is the increased capacity at a lower cost.

Re: New car MP3 player... ooooohhhhhh! - 12/03/2002 15:10

Agreed. I was just meaning that if 3.5" drives were what was holding someone back - there may be a workaround.

I notice that changing the volume requires selecting the audio properties menu or something... ie: it is really meant to supply a head unit. did I get this wrong?

Re: New car MP3 player... ooooohhhhhh! - 12/03/2002 15:11

I'm pretty sure there's no amp. the hookup is probably just like Neo.... you need a head unit.

Re: New car MP3 player... ooooohhhhhh! - 12/03/2002 15:15

Just noticed too that it appears to only have 1 set of RCA outputs... perfect for feeding a headunit but no good for being the only source. 80dB signal to noise?! ick

It is neat though. Maybe lurkers on this board who missed out on an empeg will be interested. I''m curious what sort of hacking community will pop up for it.

It's a Neo clone - read the user guide, nothing to get excited about.

nothing to get excited about.

Oh, don't get me wrong. I am not in the market. It's just interesting how it seems (to me) to have come from out of nowhere. As for the Hungary thing... Everyone deserves a chance I guess.

Re: New car MP3 player... ooooohhhhhh! - 12/03/2002 15:31

err, not really that interesting, looks like a NEO clone to me!

the neo is a nice bit of kit, i got one around here somewhere, but it just doesn't fit in the dash to that's that!

besides .... visualisations ..... ethernet .... ooooo .... come on guys we've already got the best bit of kit on the market!

It wouldn't surprise me if it was reverse-engineered (in part) from the Neo or if it's just licensed Neo tech in a prettier case.

Of course, if they want to sell them WITH drives in Canada, they'd better hurry up. Otherwise a 160GB model will carry a $3360.00 tarriff.

This thing wasn't too thought out unless I'm missing something, The way it has its own bay ina computer, well that sounds nice, but what about Laptop owners, There's not exactly a free bay anywhere, that kinda makes it limited

Re: New car MP3 player... ooooohhhhhh! - 13/03/2002 09:10

It doesn't have to be well thought out. This is its competition. Not the $1000 Empeg.

This unit has the Neo beat by $100. Previous to this unit, Neo was the only company selling to this segment of the market (people that want cheap hard drive-based MP3 capability in their car). This is why this is a big deal.

As for laptop connectivity... The Neo has an optional USB adapter. I wouldn't be surprised if this unit is compatible with the Neo sled. If it isn't, I'm sure they will make one.

On another note:
This thread was posted in Off-Topic for a reason. It is not related to Empeg. This means that this post was simply meant to inform about a new product. It was NOT meant to try and get people to sell their Empegs and buy this thing. Please keep this in mind for the future. Otherwise, I will be forced to post things like this under a different user name to avoid community backlash.

Wasnt meaning to backlash, just commenting on yet another player
that I'm not impressed with. Since having an Empeg I couldnt imagine having anything else, period.
As everyone that reads this knows nothing comes close or will ever come close.

I wasn't pointing a finger at anyone in particular. It's just a feeling I get. I posted similar things twice before and felt the burn also.
