Changing Modem COM ports in Windows 98 - 25/03/2002 11:54

I have a computer here at my work that is running Windows 98 and we need it to use a modem to transmit payroll using the SBT Accounting software program. In the program, there is a modem configuration screen that lets you choose what com port your modem is on, com 1-4.

When I installed the plug and play modem, and defaulted to COM 5. and when I check the modem properties in the control panel, it says COM5 and it doesn't have a drop down box to choose com 1-4. I have tried uninstalling it and moving it to different PCI slots, but it keeps on choosing COM 5 which the program doesn't support.

Does anybody out there know how to manually change this setting?

thanks in advance.

Have you tried disabling one of the two com ports on the PC ? If you disable com2, there's a good chance the play and play modem will choose com2 instead of 5.

Sometimes these type of modems put a utility in the control panel that allows you to choose the COM port.
