What is interesting about this is that according to the above information - the domain riocar.com was registered before (if I recall the details correctly now) the S3 announcement of the acquisition of Empeg by Sonicblue.

Not sure if anyone can shed any light on this - it could be a hint that someone had inside information about the empeg/RioCar product beforehand, or maybe someone guessed correctly that S# might do a mp3 car player under the Rio brand?

Can't accuse anyone of cyber-squatting if they registered a domain name before the product even existed can you?

Can any of the Empeg guys comment on the dates here - I know this was probably thrashed to death back when this domain was first registered.

I believe the registrar was in brazil...

If rio = river in Spanish / Portuguese
and car = filth / dirt / noise

then maybe "rio"+ "car" = A "river of filth" - aka a porn site?

When we, Rio (SB), selected the name "Rio Car" there was (sadly) little research done into the domain name availability. As soon as it had been selected, I personally snagged riocar.org since corporate was typically too slow to move on things like this. Glad we've got is now.

As noticed, riocar.com had previously been registered at that time.

The main Rio home page at the time was riohome.com - it doesn't take a great leap of imagination to come up with riocar.com.

The acquisition of empeg was announced in November 2000.
