Hard disk upgrade

Hard disk upgrade - 26/03/2004 08:58

Hi folks,

I like the look of the Karma, but for two problems:

1. The lack of user-replaceable battery (a shame that they didn't learn from the Apple furore on this)

2. The small hard disk size (my collection is already 120Gb and climbing)

Re. 2, has anyone tried upgrading the internal hard disk? And/or does anyone know what type and size it is?

TIA

Re 2: the plan (AFAIK) was to ship both 20 and 40GB players, but it seems (since no one else, AFAIK, has presented some piece of kit utilising the 40GB version of this formfactor hard drive) that there's some sort of problem with the 40GB drives...

If I remember correctly, there was a post around here about the 40GB hard drive being slightly larger (thicker) and that it would not fit properly.

It might be perfect for you as the computer software is clever enough to keep your Mp3 colection circulate as it deletes some stuff from the karma and then uploads new stuff each time you connect it.

Re: Hard disk upgrade - 26/03/2004 12:39

Hmmmm, fascinating. Most of my collection is on CD's, but rather than have to upgrade the internal disk I could get a much cheaper additional 3.5" hard disk.

I still have an unanswered question about cases, but I'm pretty much thinking "where can I buy this from now?!" :-) I live in Brazil atm (although I'm a UK citizen). I can see the US price is kinda nice, but the Rio Audio site (http://www.digitalnetworksna.com) doesn't show any buy option for the Karma (weird). I can't easily find a place via Google either (in Brazil). Any ideas on where I can find a store locator for Brazil?...

TIA

You'd be best to find a kind US or UK citizen to ship one over to you. Amazon (UK at least) will let you pay for it and have it shipped to any UK address. That person can then ship it onto you and you can pay them by paypal.

Hummm. I'd definitely prefer the USA price :-) But I'm wondering whether I can get it here. Do Rio sell at all in Brazil? Not sure if anyone knows...

The Karma has only just been released in UK I think. I know I had to ship a Karma to someone in Denmark as they weren't out there. I don't think they have reached South America but I might be wrong. Someone will know better than me. Are theye even available to the rest of Europe yet?

Edit: There are some good prices on Ebay.com - I'm sure they would ship to Brazil.

Hmm, weren't there 2 differently thick cases planned? Think I saw that mentioned here on the BBS...

Yes, I nearly bought one for my old car. It's too big for what I want though, and the Karma looks very nice.

Re: Hard disk upgrade - 29/03/2004 09:04

I believe the resulting devices were all made to the nominal 40GB thickness, but with a 20GB drive. There was some flap over the advertised dimensions not matching the shipping units' dimensions IIRC.

Re: Hard disk upgrade - 29/03/2004 09:39

That turned out to be incorrect information. The units were not made to 40gb thickness, and the web site dimensions were simply in error rather than being based on a different set of dimensions.

Thanks for the eBay idea. I'll take a look. I'm still uhmming and aahing about getting one... I love the UI, specifically the various ways to play music which is something it seems no other MP3 player has. After all, it's all about the music and with MP3 we should have functions like this...
