More Karma?

More Karma? - 08/08/2005 21:41

Hi there!

I've just had a friend of mine on my local Linux Group list ask about players that can do all the things that Karmas can do. Of course, Karmas are now discontinued, and the guy who was reselling them in Australia has now run out of stocks. So can anyone here tell me of any plans for new Karmas? We're talking about a 40GB+ player that can play OGG, FLAC, MP3 and others in a compact form factor. What's the news?

Thanks in advance,

Paul

Sad. Wireless or Bluetooth through the SD slot would have given them a real edge on Apple. We could then have car stereos (ie...the empeg) that could play music from the Chroma as long as it was in range. Ubercool.

Enagadget also has an article about the Carbon C, that player doesn't have the easy to break scroll wheel anymore, has 30 gigs, and a remote.

Sounds from the article that these things were ready to ship. Maybe there will be a fire sale? Probably not because they won't want to support them. Maybe some lucky dumpster diver will strike it rich.

Hmm... This has got me thinking of "the future". I've got about 9 months left on my best buy waranty for my Karma. I had always assumed the hard drive would die, Rio would realease a really cool player, and I'd go upgrade on Best Buy's tab.

As it stands now, my Karma's hard drive shows no signs of dieing and Rio won't be releasing anything soon. Best Buy stocks ipods, creative's offerings and one iRiver player at the moment. I'll either get religion and then start praying that my Karma's hard drive keeps on keeping on, or I'll start buying dead karma's on ebay and whacking 'em till I get a working backup.

If the Karma played mp2 files I'd be doing that.
