Rio Receiver availability outside of the US

Rio Receiver availability outside of the US - 14/12/2001 08:13

If everyone outside of the USA who is serious about wanting to buy a Rio Receiver sends me an email I'll look into finding some way to help on a one-off basis. No promises.

I think I'll hold for the moment, until I see what the Rio Advanced Digital Audio Center can and can't do - and at what price

Either way, hopefully that product will be more available than the Receiver...

Hint: You will probably want both.

The new product will only be available in the USA for now. International release is more of an issue than for the Receiver because there are network infrastructure matters to be considered.

I don't see how it could be much less available internationally than the Receiver is currently...

(sorry, couldn't resist that one)

Okaayy...

But I still think I'll hold off on the Receiver until I know a bit more of what this'll do - hopefully the Receiver will still be available then...

Well, I'd say that I'm surprised. But I'm not.

The Rio Receiver is currently available in the UK. It is however a US product with UK cable. Unfortunately the packaging is damaged and we are re-packing. Consumers wishing to buy the product immediately can contact [email protected]. Alternatively it will be available through normal distribution channels from mid-January.

I guess I am missing something when you say there are infrastructure issues holding back release outside of USA - care to expand on that statement Rob ?

On the empeg BBS it was explained as the need for an ISP, if a customer isn't already 'net connected, for the integrated modem to dial into...

What a shame. Wonder if anyone is bothering on working to fix this, or perhaps more likely is that they will wait until mid 2002 to see how well the unit sells in the USA before bothering with the rest of the world.

Re: Rio Receiver availability outside of the US - 17/12/2001 16:51

In the UK it's pretty easy - use BTclick (ie, 0345 number which pays for the net access)

Problem is, it costs per call so you need to warn the customer before dialling... in the US the issue is more that the ISPs have to be paid for the calls the HSX might make so the owner doesn't have to pay for a subscription.

Hence it looks simple to me, configure the HSX for a UK ISP that just uses a local call number, but you don't have to sign up for or pay subscription. Place a warning/information sheet in the box and sell it in the UK.
