Ogg support on Rio not looking good - 29/08/2002 08:21

The subject pretty much says it all. I incorporated the fixpvorbis code into RioPlay last night only to find out that the Receiver doesn't seem to have the horsepower to decode it. I also tried using the 'decoder' program included with fixpvorbis just to make sure it wasn't due to too much overhead in RioPlay or something.

There might be a way around this, but right now it doesn't look too good... Any ideas?

It's a bummer, but not too surprising.

I'd consider the fallback position to be transcoding at the server.

We may eventually see a less demanding encoder for Ogg. Until then, we can transcode to flac (which we can play natively) without any further loss of quality.

Once I finish the integration and testing of the new tag parsing machinery for jrec I'll be returning to fix jrec bugs and to test ogg->flac and ogg->mp3 transcoding.

ps, the nifty new tag parser is a separate project, http://sourceforge.net/projects/ptarmigan
