Does anyone know exactly what the empeg uses its initrd for? It appears that it is, at least partially, empeg-pump, but I don't know if it does anything else, nor do I know exactly what empeg-pump does.

Off the top of my head ISTR someone suggesting that it was used during database (re)building...but as I have no clue why I remember that, I could be wrong.

It just runs pump from what I can tell by mounting the ramdisk. The entire contents of the ramdisk are just some device files and linuxrc (pump) which is run automatically.
It's used to load the upgrade FS image onto the root partition. The binary doesn't seem to do anything else from what I can tell.
