It hasn't been fixed (at least not in any available version of the software). You will need to use Ethernet instead if you can get USB to work with XP.

Hi Andy
Don't know much about ethernet is it as fast as USB?
I guess it doesn't matter much if the USB is not working :-)
and it has to be faster than the serial port..
Thanks for the quick reply.

Pete, please click on each highlighted phrase below to read the relevant FAQ entries:

Which is faster, USB or Ethernet?

Why doesn't emplode work via USB on Windows XP?

And in anticipation of future questions...

Why can't I get ethernet to work?

Mr Fabris must be the best promotional tool for screen wipes ever known. After reading...

And if we lived in a perfect world of blue skies, flowers and little fluffy bunnies, manufacturers wouldn't over-inflate hardware specifications.

...in the FAQ entry he linked I had another one of those "coffee on monitor" moments we know and love...

Just out of curiosity, it seems like the Mk1 people would be the ones crying bloody murder about this. Ethernet is far superior and does everything USB does, so there's no real need for USB other than simplicity on a Mk2. But, i've been considering getting a Mk1 for posterity, and to do that I'd have to dual boot into something other than XP on one of my computers. I don't suppose there's a chance that linux USB drivers and jEmplode would all come together and just work? It's all academic to me, as I don't have a Mk1 at the moment...

Not unless you're running Linux on the PC. Because (IIRC) it's the Windows USB driver that's broken.

Well, running linux was a foregone conclusion. Are you saying that jemplode would work on linux box connected to the empeg over USB? One of these days I'll download emptool and play with it so I know what it's capabilites are.

Well, running linux was a foregone conclusion.

Not necessarily -- the player runs Linux, so you can see the source of my misunderstanding. I just wanted to clarify what we were talking about here.

Anyway, yes, the car player works fine connected to a Linux PC using USB.

Re: XP usb issue - 23/12/2002 12:34

I found how to get USB to work in XP... its a bit messy however.

The trick is to open up Device Manger (rick click on My Computer and go to Properties). You will see the RioCar listed under USB. Right click it to disable it. Then, open emplode and try to connect to the RioCar via USB. As emplode is searching for the player, right click RioCar in Device Manager and enable it.

It might take 1 or 2 tries to get the timing of it. It's almost as if XP is grabbing hold of the RioCar's usb driver. By enableing it only when emplode is looking for it, things somehow work.

I figured this out in a panic one day when I showed up to run sound for an improv comedy show the day I bought my new laptop w. XP. I forgot my crossover cable and only had the USB w. me.

I use XP and what I have found is that if I just disconect the usb two or three times till it hooks up. Once it gets locked on I have no problem with downloading music or syncing.

Re: XP usb issue - 23/12/2002 18:19

Actually, if you start emplode with the empeg connected it'll show the empeg but won't be able to connect. Hit "Cancel"; Unplug the empeg and immediately plug it back in. "File", "Open Player Database" then select your empeg...it works every time for me.

I discovered this while downloading a boatload of 320kbps mp3's from the RIO Central to my Iomega 20GB Peerless drive by night and uploading the mp3's from the peerless to the empeg at the office by day. I didn't have an extra ethernet connection at my desk so the only alternative was USB with emplode.

Re: XP usb issue - 24/12/2002 11:16

Sounds like we are all doing basically the same thing.... removing the RioCar from whatever is holding it and letting emplode get first dibs... damn I HATE using non-technical descriptions for things I don't understand.... like when my old supervisor, who had NO computer knowledge would explain network outages in sports terms... (did you guys know that long ping times are due to the remote computer using the wrong play book? Neither did I !)

Re: XP usb issue - 26/12/2002 23:41

Seems it would be easier figuring out ethernet than installing a new OS!

I had no clue how to use ethernet until I got my empeg - Tony's FAQ taught me how . I started with a notebook w. a network card using a crossover cable ($10) to the empeg. Even easier than that is plugging into a router that is running DHCP. Simply set up everything connected to the router to "automatically obtain IP"! Can't get easier than that!
