Installed SMD and LEDs, now no display

Installed SMD and LEDs, now no display - 03/02/2003 15:08

Oh God, I feel sick...

I bought the SMD & LEDs from Brian (aka Hulkster), printed and followed the instructions to the letter... put it back together, and now no display, no lit LEDs, and the buttons and remote control also have quit working.. it does still play however...

I soldered the LEDs myself, and took the surface mount resistor into an electronics shop to do.. they did it, I examined it with a magnifying glass, and he said he tested it with meter.. it looked good.. he inspected my LED install, and gave it a thumbs up too...

What oh what have I done, and what do I need to do to get my poor sick Rio working properly again?!

You likely plugged in the display connector off-by-one-pin.

Probably blew a motherboard fuse in the process.

You know, when I first read about being "off by one" I thought, no way couldn't happen, not me...

Well... looks like that was the case. The problem is not carelessness, it's that the connector on the cable is physically larger than the receiving pins, and gives the illusion of being correct when it is in fact "off by one" - I left alligned the connector when I first put it together, thinking that was correct.. too used to computer inards, I guess..

Are there other fuses, etc that I should check before ordering from Digi? They charge a $5 fee for orders under $25, so don't want to get stung too many times order $0.79 parts.. I'm a bit worried that I might have cooked another one as I took the connector off, reseated it - and now get nada.. not even the blinking blue light on the side..

Out of curiosity how much did they charge to solder the resistor to the board and what kind of shop did you take it to? Everyone I talked to said it was too small and they wouldn't touch it. (ended up doing it myself, but I have a second empeg that i'd like to install LED's on and don't wanna deal with the fine soldering...)

I took it to an electronics shop here in Burnaby, just your average TV/VCR/Stereo repair shop. I explained how absolutely critical is was that he let me know if could solder the SMD or not - cause I don't want to loose my Rio! The guy was confident he could, and charged me $20 Canadian - not a bad price, really.

And I'm sure he did a wonderful job... on the soldering...

After reviewing http://www.mrmunsell.com/EMPEG/Fuse_Replacement/fuse_replacement.html it only lists one fuse, but I understand that there are two or possibly three that can blow and cause the display to blank.. well, I know for sure I have two blown out, but not sure which other ones I need to check (I could check all, but thought better to know rather than guess), and what the part numbers are that I need - I have emailed support and got a reply (this was to test the fuse) and then after that, nada - I have sent two more emails since asking for the part numbers politely, but have received no response... does anyone have access to this info, or a phone # so I can call support directly? (yes, I know they are in Europe.)

Thanks for whatever you can suggest...

There ARE 3 fuses like you said;
1. Circled
2. Immediately to the right of the circled one
3. Below 2. on the opposite side of the connector (horizontally orientated)

Credz to Kimbotha for posting the image

Edit: There's this post WRT the circled fuse. I'd suppose that if they all bear the same markings they are the same value but this is definitely a good time for someone who really knows to chip in!

Thank you for your reply... do you know what the part #'s, or specs are on the fuses that are needed?

I was editing my post while you were replying......
1A, 1206 size SMT (From Hugo)

Also, in the General area General parts list.... discussion there's this:
Fuse Replacement
FUSE FAST-ACT 1.00A 63V 1206 SMD Digikey part WK4661CT-ND

Re: Installed SMD and LEDs, now no display - 10/02/2003 17:28

So does that mean that all three fuses are the same?

Re: Installed SMD and LEDs, now no display - 10/02/2003 17:55

I honestly don't know, sorry. I'd guess they probably were the same but I think you need someone who knows to chip in here!

They're all the same.

Thank you - Rob Schofield got back to me yesterday, and is sending me a few fuses to fix my unit - fingers crossed I should be up and running in a week or so (soon as the post arrives!).... I've had to load up a CD wallet in the meantime and schlep them around wherever I go...
