Linking 2 Empegs?

Linking 2 Empegs? - 05/06/2000 06:05

I had a thought the other day (yes, shame on me... =)
As empeg's have serial ports on them, and (in the car) they have line inputs, what would be the feasability of linking 2 empegs together in a master / slave configuration...

For example:
A mark 2 empeg, with a mark 1 empeg connected to the line input, and via serial.
The mark 2 dowloads the playlist info from the mark 1, and combines it with it's own.
If the user requests a tune from the slave empeg, it starts to play it, and the master empeg switches inputs.

Not a useful feature for most people, but it would be a really good geek demo... =)

Of course, with 2 mark 2's you'd probably use the ethernet and the first empeg would play tunes off the second (using it as a filestore)

I'll shut up now... =)

If you had 2 Mk2's - could you maybe sell one

That's a really good idea Jazzwire - I don't think it'd be too hard to implement in the software, and it might be an added incentive for current Mark1 owners to purchase a mark2 without selling their old unit:)

Yes, of course. And it gets you past the ridiculous limitation of only being able to have 25 days of music in your car at one time.

You could always mount the other empeg's discs via NFS or similar to the \drive3 directory on the original empeg?

The player software seems to see the extra drives anyway.

Actually you could mount something from the network too....

Hmmmmm

How about a Beowulf cluster in the car... world's first mobile supercomputer anyone?

Somebody's been spending far too much time on Slashdot... =)

However, linking multiple empegs to form a Beowulf video wall could be fun... =)

Re: Linking 2 Empegs? - 06/06/2000 04:12

So if multiple empegs have airport adaptors in-car, can we exchange batch rendering jobs while stopped at the lights or playing in traffic?

Re: Linking 2 Empegs? - 06/06/2000 04:15

Now there's a concept... =)

Could be good with something like RC5... Drive past some office buildings, and pick up new work units... =)

Unfortunately not, as airport base stations won't talk to each other. You could do it with other adapters though - I can just envisage a whole new napster can of worms, as people head for the M25 to swap tunes :)

Yer, sitting on the M6 swapping music, now thats one hell of a fun way to pass the time during tailbacks.

Better still, have all the empegs on the M25 playing the same tune at the same time... =)
(As long as it's not a tune from Hugo's empeg... =)

LOL - A new form of digital broadcast, all around the country, pick it up on any PC, including your empeg. Imagine the pirate radio there.

Conjures up images of people chasing each other down the motorway to keep up the music.

Heh, or with GPS on the empegs it could show the relative speed between cars... =)

Or Toby could base a new visual on relative co-ordinates of other empegs

Which you can't see due to the in-car visual setting... =)

Re: Linking 2 Empegs? - 06/06/2000 09:31

If we have a Beowulf cluster running, let the spare processing power take over the mundane task of actually driving the car... then we can watch the visuals and the in-car setting won't be necessary!!! I think I need to go and lie down in a dark room...

hmm.. I think Empeg would be millionaire's if we got to the point where you could run a napster-type service off the empeg's while you were driving:)What's the range of wavelan again, 150 feet? Let's see.. One empeg, every 150 feet.. Do the math:)

Hey, no more moaning about that, we put in a fast toggle (hold the bottom button) into Beta11pre!

I can hardly moan about that, considering I think I may have suggested holding the bottom button to toggle... (even if it wasn't my idea, at least let me believe that for a day or two, it might be my claim to fame! )

Can the fast toggle be configured to switch to info line, not info off... =)
