i've searched the web briefly, but couldn't find any definitive answers wether or not the empeg (any version) supports these newer versions of media files..
Does anyone know?

Yes, we know.
No, it doesn't.
The empeg supports mp3, non-DRM WMA, and WAV. Starting in version 3 of the software (not in even beta release yet), it will also support Ogg Vorbis and flac.

Other formats are not supported at this time, due to a lack of demand. OGG and FLAC have been added in the version 3.0 software, which was in beta at the time of this writing.
Wow, we regressed from beta 3.0 to alpha 3.0.
