Display problem after soft reset

Display problem after soft reset - 12/09/2004 07:18

I have another problem with one of my empeg players, this time it seems to be a software problem.

The player works as expected after powering on, but as soon as it does a soft reset (either through hijack menu reboot or during synchronisation) the display stays blank forever. The LED on the display board does not flash.
Powering off and on brings the display back to life. The problems only seems to arise with installed hijack kernel. (see below)

Has anybody else seen this problem?

Player 2.0 plain works as expected
Player 2.0 with Hijack 413 does not work
Player v3a8 plain does not work (most likely because hijack is included in original empeg source in this version)
Player v3a8 with Hijack 413 does note work

The empeg has been upgraded to 48MB of RAM. It's a two disk system (80GB+30GB).

Some more information:
Player Version 3 Alpha 8 with hijack 390 works perfect
Player Version 3 Alpha 8 with hijack 394 does not work

(Versions 391,392,393 crashes my player so I can't test these)

Seems to be a timing issue detecting extra dram.

This is *only* the display? In other words, you can still hear music playing and you can switch tracks, you just can't see what you're doing?

Yes, the problem is only the display. Everything else works as expected. No special lines in boot log, everything is like usual but the display is dark.

There is a known problem with rebooting / soft resets of the player. It is thought that there are some memory issues (either not being cleared or initialized) that are causing these glitches. The reason you see it with software combinations is that the more recent hijacks and alphas are aware of the extra memory, while 2.0 alone is not.

A custom hijack kernel (v413) compiled with the option CONFIG_EMPEG_EXTRA_RAM=n works flawless. So it seems the problem is indeed the extra memory.
