To uplad my music..... - 31/03/2005 20:09

Is it way faster to use the ethernet link versus the com1 link to upload music to my player??

Re: To uplad my music..... - 31/03/2005 20:21

Definitely. The serial connection is at about 115.2kbps. The ethernet is at 10Mbps, so about 87 times faster.

Re: To uplad my music..... - 31/03/2005 20:21

Yeah, but if you terminate the upload mid-synch, make sure to read this.

If you reboot the player when the disk drives are read/write, you might cause file system errors that need to be corrected. The link I just gave you will sub-link to the necessary instructions.

Any while Tony's got you reading the FAQ, you might want to scroll back to the top and read it down to the bottom. It's a long read, but it's all worthwhile information.

Also, before you restart your upload, you may want to spend some serious time with Your Favorite ID3 Tag Editor getting the tags exactly right. It may not seem important now, but you'll be glad you did later when you want to tackle Jemplode's soup playlists or simply use the tweak order function.

Sooo, in order to use the ethernet link, do I just pull out the internet one and plug one end into the player and one in the computer?? It doesn't seem to be able to find it.

How fast is the USB in comparison to the com1 port

Re: To uplad my music..... - 31/03/2005 20:48

It's very slightly slower than the ethernet. I was actually just getting ready to suggest that you use that.

Re: To uplad my music..... - 31/03/2005 20:49

Ok, ok, so I have a direct connection to the player via USB and it can't seem to find it, whats up, or can you point me in the right direction.

You need to install the USB driver. Make sure to read the release notes, especially if you're running XP.

Re: To uplad my music..... - 31/03/2005 20:58

Where do I find this magical USB driver? Thanks for everyone's help by the way.

Re: To uplad my music..... - 31/03/2005 21:02

The USB driver was in the bundle with emplode itself.

Please note that you must be running Emplode Version 2.0 Final, and player firmware version 2.0 Final.

You must also hand-install the USB driver if you're using Windows XP.

The same place as the rest of the software that supports the empeg. Click on "Latest Software" at the top of this page.

Re: To uplad my music..... - 31/03/2005 21:09

I have opened the emplode folder and cannot find the USB driver nor can I find it in latest software, again, keep in mind I am like a 4 year old, on my best day with this whole Rio stuff. What is the driver called??

Re: To uplad my music..... - 31/03/2005 21:26

I have tried to install the driver via device manager, but as far as I can tell I do not have that driver on my competer, also I didnt't have to unzip my version of emplode

Then you have the wrong version. Version 2.0 final requires you to unzip it.

You know, you can skip the whole USB thing just by hooking up the ethernet properly. I gave you a link earlier, with detailed instructions on how to hook up ethernet. You really need to look at that, and go through it step by step, and follow the sub links.

Re: To uplad my music..... - 31/03/2005 21:39

Let me be more specific. All you should need to do is plug the empeg properly via ethernet. In other words, plug the empeg into the hub/router rather than straight into the computer, (and then reboot the empeg) and there's a good chance it will "just work".

Re: To uplad my music..... - 01/04/2005 00:12

Just as everything else was going well, frustration shows its ugly face, I am trying to do this ethernet thing by having my computer plugged in to the router and the RIo plugged in the router but nothing is clicking, I am going to try the Ip and mask number matching deal. Except it is taking forever to check disk integrity.

Right, that's probably because you killed it half way through the last synch, and the player got rebooted with the hard disks read-write. Just like I warned above.

Relevant FAQ entry is here.

I got the USB up and running, however the whole disk check integrity thing, it makes a funny clicking noise coming from the player when doing this, is it supposed too??

Yeah I hear you on that, way too many posts, please don't hate me, just trying to learn, what do I do about the clicking??

Re: To uplad my music..... - 02/04/2005 01:58

Most likely, replace the hard drive.

It's probably a sign of incipient hard drive failure. However, you can probably use it until it starts to fail badly, as long as you have a backup of your data and are okay with reloading it when it does fail.

Re: To uplad my music..... - 02/04/2005 02:24

Clicking not always bad. May be just normal hard drive seeking he's hearing.

TonyC was commenting on Tfabris' post count. He litterally has over 23,000 posts. Nobody is knocking you for seeking help, we've all been there once or twice and that's what this BBS is for.

Like Mark said, some clicking is normal, and some drives click louder than others. A failing hard drive can make a painful clicking noise, but it's usually louder and abnormal sounding. Might make you grind your teeth when you hear it!
