No power

No power - 14/04/2005 22:18

All at the sudden my empeg will not start in my car, not at home. No power at all. No blinking led, no boot, nothing. Where should I look at? Thank you for your help...

You won't believe this. Or maybe you will. One of the HDD screws just fell on the MB, shortcutting something. I just had to remove it to have the empeg booting regularly again.
Now, I decided to use some duct tape to make sure the screws don't fall again. Any recommendation on what to use? Will duct tape eventually detach, or cause problems of other kinds due to temperature, for example?
I just though my empeg was dead... Terrible...

Blue lock-tite or clone. This is the stuff that you can break free with hand tools. Just don't use it and =really= torque down the screws.

You were astonishingly lucky. By all rights, that screw should have rattaled around and shorted and destroyed components that were expensive or impossible to replace.

You must be living right...

Yes. What they said. You are incredibly lucky that you didn't let the expensive blue smoke out of your empeg player. There is a FAQ entry on this, including the aforementioned suggestion of threadlock. Do not use duct tape.

I was. The more I think of it the more I realize how close I was to a loved and dead empeg. I don't even want to think about it. When I saw that screw I almost lost all hope, to see my empeg come back to life just one second later, when I decided to give it a try. Wow.
I was helped by the fact that I was close to home when it turned off, so the screw did not have the time to make too much damage. On the other hand, I did pull my empeg out from the dash several times, looking for some lose wire in the back of the sled.

Edit:
Tony, I knew it had to be in the FAQ! Those are a masterpiece!
Anyway, I used duct tape for the time being. I understand threadlock is better, but is there any specific reason why duct tape is not good?

Because tape will probably fall off eventually, thus being identical to having done nothing at all.

I'm also not convinced that the silver side of duct tape is nonconductive, although I don't know about that really.

Re: No power - 15/04/2005 01:16

The drive screws should have had little reddish paper washers acting as spacers under the hard disk. Those same little washers normally prevent the screws from ever coming loose.

If your unit is missing those, then your hard disk is very much in danger of "death by spindle pressure". Get some spacers!

Cheers

Thanks for the recommendation Mark! Spacers are in fact there, though! Maybe one of the was too lose to prevent screws from coming out... ?
