Tuner not receiving

Tuner not receiving - 30/06/2006 21:35

My Tuner has been working great for the last year or so since installed. Then last week I turned it on and I’m now just getting static. The player recognizes there is a tuner but I just get static on all frequencies, AM and FM. I pulled the car’s antenna wire (yes it was connected OK) and put a piece of wire in the antenna hole to check to see if the car’s antenna was bad, still just static. I even tried my wife’s player in my car and I got the same thing.

Does anybody have any suggestions or is the receiver part of my tuner fried?

You've done pretty much everything I think would help.

Does the static change at all as frequency is changed? Is AM different to FM?

The static does appear to change when the channels change and there is definitely a difference between FM and AM. I took the cover off and did not see any cold solder joints. I even tried flexing the board and pressing on components to see if anything changed, nothing.

One thing I that kind of puzzled me is that when I put the wire in the antenna the static changed. If there is a problem in the front-end of the tuner I don’t understand why the static would change. Maybe the mixer frequency (I think that’s what it’s called) is off somehow.

Double check that the problem isn't a frayed wire or a loose connection on the control wires that lead to the tuner from the player's sled.

Is this a factory (black box) or a PCA (grey box) tuner?

The factory ones regularly suffer from the failure of the audio output amplifier which gives this symptom.

Thanks, I slightly pulled on all the wires and nothing came loose. I guess I probably should ohm them. The red LED does come on. Yea, I know there's a lot more wire than just the power.

Sorry I thought I posted that it was a factory tuner but I guess I didn't. If you could please share, which chip is the audio output amplifier? I have limited tools now (just a multi-meter) is there any voltages I could check for? I'm pretty good at soldering so I feel confident I could change a surface mounted chip (as long as it isn't huge).

Thanks
