Drives Won't Spin Down

Drives Won't Spin Down - 12/08/2010 01:18

Anyone know what might cause an Empeg's drives to stay spun up even when not playing music? I know there are some config.ini entries that might cause this, but I don't see anything but stock stuff there. Are there some entries I could try that might force them to spin down? I know there is a thread somewhere about this but when I search all I get are 80 pages of unrelated results.

Thanks,
Stu

Cache too small or they're playing FLAC files?

Hi,

If they are playing .wav files, it will run all of time too.

It's evidently not wavs or FLACs as I had asked this already, but would a small cache cause the drives to stay spun up even when the player is paused?

hdparm has a flag to tell drives to spin down. You could at least see what happens when you force it.

I'd be inclined to say that a large cache would be more likely to cause the drives to stay spun up, as that might prevent the OS from keeping the running binaries in active RAM.

Crazy idea: Try rebuilding the database.

Corollary question: How many tracks on this player? What do the tags look like, are they pretty clean? (i.e., tons of information in the "comment" field of every tag for example?)

Player version number?

I don't have the player- just trying to help out, but will advise that.

I had this player maybe 14 months ago. As I recall it has two 100 GB drives with a ton of files. I don't recall how much detail was contained in the tags. It should be running the 2.00 developer. Plus it has the FID fix since there are so many files.

He is complaining the unit is overheating which we've attributed to the drives never spinning down and has confirmed that the temp is around 115F.

Does anyone know the config.ini entry that controls the drive spin cycle? They are supposed to force the drives to spin down after a certain period of time or never spin down, etc. I know there is one but can't find it here.

Thanks,
Stu
