"Bad pump response" occurred during stage 0x25 - 09/01/2011 15:57

I purchased two 250GB WD Scorpio Blue hard drives (one per MK2a player of mine) and I downloaded the 3 latest big-disk-builder images with LBA48 support (v3, v3_alt & v6). I tried running each one with the Upgrade Wizard and I tried both hard drives, but every time I encounter the same problem: Error "Bad pump response" occurred during stage 0x25. I plugged the hard drive into the end cable position (with the red band on the side of the #1 pin) and one attempt I even added a jumper to bridge the end pins which I believe is the slave/master jumper setting.

Can someone (perhaps named Mark Lord) fix this? wink Help...

Hi,

Make sure the WD 250GB drive is strapped correctly (you only have strapped, right).

I have recently been working with the exact configuration - I have a lot of them with 2 each 250GB drive configurations.

I have the left drive (end drive with the strap - it goes vertical down the pins, not across the pins by the way), the right drive is without a strap.

You must have one strapped and one not. You can't have 2 drives strapped or 2 drives with no strap.

Before adding tunes read the current thread entitled "250GB Drives" in the General section of the List Forum.

Ross, I assume by strapped, you mean what we call jumpered in the US. I am only using one drive per unit so I don't have any jumpers or straps on them. Am I supposed to for a master/single drive configuration? If so, which two pins do I connect? The end ones farthest from the data cable, correct?

YES, Ross! It works!! Yay! The stupid cable was not seated completely into the motherboard. D'OH! Now I know why they hot-glued these cables into place at the factory. No jumper needed for a single drive so the jumper must be for the slave drive as I originally suspected. There's no documentation with this drive and I couldn't find it on the Net either, at least not on the WD site.

Most drives have a diagram for the jumpers on the top. I'd be surprised (though not astonished) to find one that didn't.

The WD Caviar in front of me has no jumper diagram (and four jumpers).

Well this was pretty easy to find:

http://wdc.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/wdc.cfg/...27%2C194#jumper

Doesn't appear to have jumpers for master/slave though...

Duh. Was looking at the SATA drive not the IDE one.

Hi,

You are correct. For a single drive, there is no jumper required. One is only required for a 2 drive system.

Glad you found the cable issue. If you plug it into the car one day and it can't find the drive, check the cable first. If they are not glued or attached in some way, they can work loose.
