telnetd works only whren rw mounted ? - 26/12/2000 02:20

Hi all,

yesterday i played a little bit around with my empeg an i love it more with every second i use it. FTP and the displayserver
are now working fine.

The only Problem is telnted. It just works fine as soon as i mounted the Partition read-write (command rw). If not
i get the following message when i try to connect :

"telnetd: getpty: Exec format error"

Has anyone got around this ? Again just typing rw and hitting
enter fixes this until the next reboot.

It ist also not possible to do more then one telnet session at the same time..... i created about 5 gtpy devices including the gtpyx device like described in the devices.txt file i found.
Same i did for the tty's. Any hints ?

Best regards

hrm.. I don't know how you have your telnetd setup.. i assume the folowing.. you started a telnetd alone, without inetd.. that meens you will only get one telnet session.. telnetd may also be trying to write other files on the disk, or change permissions/user info on the pty's

I have a workaround for this :
- install inetd
- configure telnetd and rshd
- add an entry for root in the passwd file with homedir /root
- create a file /root/.rhosts with the ip of yout home PC

Now you can do a rsh commmand to mount the rootfs rw :

# rsh empeg rw
# rlogin empeg

or without mounting rw :

# rsh empeg /usr/X11R6/bin/xterm -display `echo $DISPLAY`

...my workaround was to make the "quit" command rw the disks... problem was remembering to r/o them afterwards ;p
