In car serial port - 28/04/2001 08:19

Okay folkes after installing my empeg in the car (only took five months) i can't get the serial cable off the back of the harness to work. I have tryed it with a gender changer and the cable supllied with the empeg and it don't work i have tryed it with a spare harness i have after getting one with the spare cage for in the house.

I don't think it is the harness as the sparee behaved the same. And the cable works okay as it has been used to upload new boot image etc

Emplode failed totally see the empeg and hyperterminal just dumped what could only be described as garbage when booting.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Garbage usually means a communications setting problem.

I believe the empeg defaults to a lower serial speed in car - 9600 or 4800 maybe? I think this is configurable in the player config file.

And, as per the FAQ, make sure you're set to 8-N-1 with no flow control.

I'm going to update the FAQ on the 4800 thing. Sorry it wasn't in there already.

Mk2 units with serial numbers less than about 1050 have ground missing on the serial connector. Try taking a wire and grounding your laptop's serial shell to car ground (ie, a bit of metal about somewhere). It should work then.

Hugo,
What's the correct procedure if one was to fiddle with the wiring on the sled (ie which/if any pin to ground)?

Ground is pin 5 on the connector, but the connector on the mk2 sled is moulded; a male/female bucket connector soldered back to back witha flying lead is the easiest way.

Excellent, thank you. Getting slow, only a 3 minute response time... ;-)

Yes, your unit will have this problem. There's no official fix I'm afraid. The problem doesn't affect all serial devices which may be hooked up, as most will share a ground with the car and so ther serial will work fine.

Okay could you tell me what pin to pin etc i need to make a cable going from empeg to serial connection on back of laptop so that they an chat to each other. I have a spare harness from the back of the cage if you could tell me cable colours etc would be even better if possible.

Thanks Paul
