USB Comms protocol - 21/05/2001 14:46

Just wondering what type of protocol the empeg uses to communicate. I have a personal firewall installed on my computer and I can scan and use the USB mouse just fine without the firewall complaining. When i use emplode (for the first time) it asked if i wanted emplode to communicate.

But it doesn't come up in the list of communicating programs (even unkown protocols).

What gives?

I don't think, therefore I am not.

Emplode issues network broadcasts in order to find car players attached via ethernet. This might trigger it. If you're only using USB, you can turn this off in the Options dialog.

Roger - not necessarily speaking for empeg

gota love those silly windows gimick programs.. why the heck would you need a firewall to pay attention to the USB device chain?

I think it's because you can use the USB also for PC to PC connections.
And that is a good reason to use a firewall to control also USB.
Or am I wrong?

I don't think that's what was happening. I think that he was trying to say was this:

"I have a personal firewall. It prompts me every time something tries to talk on the network. I noticed that Emplode prompts me, too, even though I only have the empeg connected via USB. Which is strange, because none of my other USB devices (mouse, scanner, etc.) make the firewall prompt me. Why does this happen?"

The reason is that Emplode, by default, does a broadcast to find network-connected players, even if none are connected. This has nothing to do with USB.

At least I think that's what's going on.
