3.5" Harddisk - 13/09/2001 09:01

I don't have an EMPEG yet, but I'm interested if there is enough space inside to put in a 3.5" harddrive.
Has anyone ever tried to do something like that?

Thanks for your answers!

No, it doesn't have room for a 3.5" hard disk.

It is, however, designed to accept two 2.5" hard disks.

There are even instructions in the FAQ section of this BBS on how to upgrade the hard disks yourself. At the current time, the biggest user upgrade was to install a pair of 48's in the unit for a total of 96 gigabytes of storage in the dash of your car. Mind boggling, isn't it?

Just out of curiosity, why is a 3.5" hard disk important? 2.5" hard disks are getting cheaper, and since they're designed for laptops, they are more rugged and better suited for mobile use.

...also, there's no 12v psu to power a 3.5" disk. 2.5" drives run from 5v only. Don't ever connect a 3.5" disk to the car "12v" as car voltage can be anything from about 11v to 15v, with negative spikes of up to 200v...

You know this from experience or is it just a warning?

Experience, this was why early mk2 empegs would shut down completely when the ignition was turned off instead of going into standby... (missing diode on accessory sense!)
