USB Speed

USB Speed - 18/11/1999 02:21

Has someone already been over this?

On my year old laptop I get about 300-350Kbit/s transferring data to the empeg. On my 3 month old desktop I get about the same.

Shouldn't "12 Mbit" USB be a little faster? Is Windoze just that bad? Are both of my machines USB el-crappo? Is the empeg USB just slow?

What kind of rates do other people get?

Anyone?

Are you sure you don't mean 300-350K BYTES per second? Divide that 12Mbits/sec by 10 and then subtract a bit more for protocol overhead and you have a realistic ceiling.

The empeg still falls short of this, partly due to lousy USB implementation in Windows and partly because we still have some optimisations to make.

No,I'm quite sure I mean 300Kbit/s. I timed it. Why do you think I asked? It is a factor of 10 or more slower than it should be. I only have the thing half full so far because I only download at night.

Seems that it goes very quick for a short time (about 10-15 minutes), then doesn't do anything (checking the disk? only I don't hear the hard disk on the empeg going) for about 15-20 minutes, then another burst of 10-15 minutes...

I get something in the region of 200 - 350Kbytes/sec depending upon which machine I use. Are you able to test your machine with a different USB device?

I've also had the same problems with the USB transfer. It happened on 3 different machines and on Win98 as well as on Win2000. It looks like the software is timing out somewhere in between. In Beta 7b or even in Beta 8 there was more debug output on the serial while transfering via USB. It said something like "preparing..." and then nothing happened for minutes, and then again the same "preparing...". I have had the same problems with Beta 8a, but it doesn't give the debug output anymore, so I can't give you the exact text that was appearing on the serial.
All over this explains the poor transfer rate via USB.

I don't have anything else to test with right now. Haven't needed any USB devices yet. The point is mostly moot now. I've finally got most of my songs over to the unit now. Just have to clean off stuff I don't want (which is fast) and then load new stuff on as I get it (just a few songs at a time).

Wasn't able to fit all my songs. But that other 6GB drive I have sitting here is just begging me to void the warranty; and I want to mess with a CD anyway....

Now I'm off to the Dodge dealership to photocopy the wiring harness pinouts! ;-)
