Crashing Rio Car - 01/02/2002 17:31

I just got my Rio Car player today and when I tried to load some mp3's on it, it crashed. Now it won't boot up at all. Just stays on the Rio Boot up screen. Anyone else ever have this?

Congratulations on your new player. Sorry it's not booting, but the solution is simple. This one is in The FAQ. Check it out, and skim the rest of the FAQ when you get a chance.

Which connection do you use - serial/USB/Ethernet?

If serial: Does emplode find the player? If you hook up serial and run Hyperterminal (instructions are in the FAQ) while booting, do you see the boot messages?

If USB: Does emplode find the player? Did you install emplode before connecting the empeg?

I installed the software before I plugged in the Rio. I get errors at stage 2 when I'm connecting via usb or serial. I ran
hyper terminal and it said that "EXT2-fs: group descriptors corrupted !" Is it supposed to be like that? I'm gonna try to connect via 10bt soon. Just gotta make some new Cat 5 wires.

OK, software before hardware is good... What version are you using?

Don't recall what stage 2 implies and can't locate the description I know is out there somewhere - maybe The Guardian of the FAQ :-), Tony, can point it out?

group descriptors corrupted doesn't sound good, but I'm no guru.
Try fsck'ing the disk - instructions here.

It could be a bad drive cable causing this - if the fsck (and possibly a new application of the system through a .upgrade file - I think you'd at least want to get to latest stable release, 1.03, compared to the 1.02 it came with shipped, anyway) doesn't help you'll want to contact support at [email protected].
Upgrade PC software first, empeg last. If the filesystem on the disk is really messed up you might also try applying the disk-builder .upgrade file for a fresh start.

Well Thanks. I usualy just skim the FAQ and never really see what I want. But I found the disk builded and used it. Wiped the hdd clean. Wasn't much on there but, I got it working now. I'm using 2.00 beta 7. I really love this thing once it started to work Now all I have to do is install it into my car, and I'm set with everything.
