Big fat drive add-on - 13/02/2002 14:44

I would like to add a big fat drive (30 or 48 GB, why not 60) to my actual 10G (IBM) RioCar but when reading the drive upgrade section on riocar.org, I'm a bit afraid that my second drive, if another IBM, couldn't work as a slave of the first one. I don't want to copy everything from the old one to the new want just to make it the master drive.
In fact, did everyone have this problem or just one person ? Or can you recommend a big drive brand that will work without any problem as a slave one of my actual IBM 10G drive ?
Let's speak about experience ...

I don't want to copy everything from the old one

If you're not worried about losing your play count stats and EQ settings, then there's no problem with configuring the existing drive as slave and the new drive as master. The player doesn't know or care which disk a particular music file is on -- it checks both when looking for it.

big fat hard drive as in like a desktop pc hdd? I don't think it would work cause you would need another power source.

No, he's talking about getting a proper drive for the player.

Hello!

Talking about hard drives... Can you tell me exactly what drive models are mounted on the empeg/Rio players?
I mean, they are IBM, I think... but which models?
Are they 12.5 mm high?

Anyone? ;-)

Thank you,

Alberto

The exact brands and models will vary. The only way to find out is to open the player.

Yes... I will receive my 10Gb soon and have a look... but was curious about the 30Gb in particular... at least those that are in the last stocks for sale...

Thank you for your answer...

You can also get some info from the serial port at boot time. Here is an example of a segment of the boot message:

And you can ``cat /proc/ide/something/something/model'' or something like that. (Can you tell I don't have my empeg here?)

My 30GB model MkIIa (RioCar) that was bought from SonicBlue on 01-16-2002 has a 30GB Fujitsu hard drive in it.

I imagine SonicBlue bought whatever quantity that they could for the cheapest price.
